and yet publishers don't want to focus on delivering what those of us who actually love to read want.

Item three is verifiable, but items 1 and 2 are not since "for the rest of their lives" and "never" have not happened yet, unless of course they surveyed the dead.

I would think that reputable statisticians could be a little more precise in their wording.

I can believe the stats. My missus - smart, intelligent lady that she otherwise is - refuses to read books. Read too many of them while studying for degree and then accountancy qualifications apparently.

She hates it when I tell her that there is no difference between not being able to read and not reading. The end result is the same.

Thinking back to my own college days, which was before there was even a computer smaller than a sports arena, and based on my own cohort struggling through 3 years of academic self-improvement, hardly any college students read a book while they were at college, let alone after !

And that includes books relating to their subjects !

( Mind you, a few wrote books, but wouldn't lower 'emselves to read works by anyone else.........)



Mind you, there were other life-skills we got very good at....

I wonder if more people would try reading as a leisure activity if fewer advocates came off as smug and pretentious.

This wasn't directed specifically at you, Avarwen, but you did manage to illustrate, in one concise, quotable package, the way many here insult not just anyone who doesn't read books, but also those who don't read books THEY approve of.
