.html .epub optimization

Using a Kobo Aura One...I have a few large-ish .epub and .html files (history texts, bibles). Is there anything I can do to optimize them so navigation is quicker?

When selecting some of the links inside, it seems to hang, get stuck. A swipe or a touch sometimes will knock it loose, but wondering if it's a memory thing, could optimizing the file help?

Ok, well, nevermind. The files I'm wanting to tweak are .kepub and doesn't look like I can do anything to them.

If they are large enough books, you are probably hitting memory and performance on the device. Some of it could be structure. If the internal files are large, splitting them can improve the performance. Using links to go from one large file to another will be especially bad.

There are things you can do with a kepub. You could convert to epub and try, but, with that you lose footnote popups and image zooming. You could test this by simply renaming the file on the device to just ".epub" instead of ".kepub.epub". But, that probably won't help if the problem the file size. A kepub-to-kepub conversion should split larger files in a similar way to an epub.

If it is a book downloaded directly from Kobo to the device, you will need to get a copy and remove any DRM before doing anything. There should be an epub version in the your library in the Kobo store, or use the Kobo desktop application plus the Obok plugin.
