keep on getting the errors of epub file using Calibre for Smashwords
EpubCheck result: Failed!
Repair required for distribution. Click here to learn how to repair, or contact your formatter or EPUB designer. Spoiler:
Rodriguez: We have detected potential problems with the ebook file you uploaded. These issues could delay or prevent your book from appearing at any retail partners. File 'META-INF/calibre_bookmarks.txt' in EPUB not listed in manifest! Your .epub file is missing one or more elements in its manifest. A complete manifest is required for distribution to Apple. Here's how Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPUB) defines "Manifest":"The manifest element lists all the files contained in the package. Each file is represented by an item element, and has the attributes id, href, media-type. All XHTML (content documents), stylesheets, images or other media, embedded fonts, and the NCX file should be listed here." Please contact your .epub designer and ask them to repair your manifest. Unfortunately, since so many authors and publishers are using so many different tools and workflows to create their .epubs, Smashwords is unable to advise you on the proper method for repairing your .epub file's manifest. One alternate solution is to upload your manuscript as a Microsoft Word document, formatted to the instructions in Smashwords Style Guide. If all this description of "manifest" is confusing to you, or if your .epub designer cannot repair your file, then the Word .doc workflow is probably an easier solution for you. Rodriguez: Hi Sridhar, this is the error... Hyperlinked Table of Contents Error - Please do not use Word's TOC field codes to construct your linked Table of Contents. Instead, per the step-by-step instructions in Step 20 of the Smashwords Style Guide, use Word's "Bookmark" feature. For more help, view our Youtube video, How to Add Navigation to Smashwords Ebooks Sridhar: Hi Alejandra, I'm checking to get the error in Smashwords, but nothing happens and it uploaded successfully. Rodriguez: Hi Sridhar, I can get to that point too, the problem is that is not accepted for the smashword premium catalog, that's where it gets the error Last edited by theducks; 12-11-2018 at 03:03 PM. I would hazard a guess that you used non-English/non-ASCII words in the tags
Go down each line, it explains what is wrong. Correct the code. Also, this is not a Calibre CAUSED issue. |

Perhaps the calibre_bookmarks.txt bookmarks file listed as missing in the manifest could be considered a calibre issue. The rest looks like a dog's breakfast though I tend to suspect the issue might be that many of the file names included accented characters.

Using the book editor to remove the file is the way to cure the inclusion. Smashwords is fussy. But the bookmark might mess up a customer who also uses Calibre for viewing. Best to not include it. |

How to use Word's "Bookmark" feature directly in Calibre Software for Smashwords ePub, rather than using Word's TOC field codes to construct linked Table of Contents?

@csridharasis - surely the best place to ask about errors from Smashwords is on the Smashwords site.
That said, why are you converting your DOCX to EPUB with calibre? I was under the impression that Smashword's business was to provide a service that relieves the author of the tedium of getting from a manuscript format (DOCX) to an electronic book format (ePUB). Have you tried any other means of converting from Word to ePUB, such as the ePubTools Word Addin (it's in the Workshop forum) or Sigil's DOCXInput plugin (it's in the Sigil forum) I'm going to move your thread to the Workshop forum - where the pro bookmakers hang out. This is the project where I received ePub file from the client and need to upload to Smashwords. I removed non-ASCII and Calibre-bookmarks.txt errors.
1) Is there any solution to clear Toc error(or .ncx) of ePub using Calibre? 2) How to modify Toc either (ePub) or (docx converted from ePub) using Calibre or any other tool for SW? |

How did the client create the epub - very few authors write their manuscripts in XHTML.
Try to get the manuscript format. It's often easier to work on the source of a problem rather than some intermediate artefact. However, meantime the Calibre and Sigil ePub editors have built in ToC tools and they also have validation plugins you should probably use before submitting the epub to SW. BR |

I'm not trying to be harsh--I'm just telling you, you're wasting time trying to fix a file that's this screwed-up. You clearly don't know HTML or CSS, which means, YOU cannot fix it. There are no apps that will fix it for you, so...you can't get there from here. Start over with a Word file, and put it through SW, and see what happens. Hitch |

As far as the made up attribute names go, I suspect there's simply missing (or extra) quotes and/or closing tags that are shifting the attribute parsing to the actual book content. It's also possible there's a mixture of typographic and regular quotes being used around what is intended to be attributes.
But yeah ... starting over sounds like the best plan to me. Without seeing the code, there's no way to tell if a couple of early corrections could shift everything back around to where it could be parsed correctly. And that would be highly doubtful even WITH the code to peruse. Last edited by DiapDealer; 12-22-2018 at 08:13 AM. |
