ePub Page Numbers in Ebook Viewer vs PRS-505

UPDATE: Adobe Digital Editions doesn't have this problem. It displays the exact same page definitions for ePub files as my PRS-505. So, while it would be nicer to use Calibre's reader (I love Calibre!), I'm ok for now. ;-)
/End Update

It's my understanding that ePub files have page numbers based on a page map, or if there is no page map, every 1024 bytes of source-content is interpreted as a "page".

My wife reads on the computer sometimes, and since the PRS-505 doesn't have a search feature, I had thought the fixed page numbers would be perfect. She could note her page number in Calibre's Ebook Viewer, and then jump to that page on the PRS-505. But for her book, Ebook Viewer says it has 977 pages(!) while the PRS-505 says 417.

Since ePub page numbers have nothing to do with how much text is displayed on the screen, why would the total number of pages be different for the same (Calibre generated) ePub file on my PRS-505 and the Ebook Viewer in Calibre?

Side note: If setting page numbers to automatically line up between PC and PRS-505 is hard to implement or impossible, it would be GREAT if Calibre's Ebook Viewer could let you manually set the total number of pages, and adjust the current page listing in the viewed book accordingly.

The 505 uses Adobe Digital Editions to render epub so the page numbers will be identical between the two. Digital Editions algorithm for calculating page numbers is unknown. In fact, since the EPUB standard does not mandate any particular algorithm for calculating page numbers every EPUB viewer has its own. Don't rely on page numbers for anything other than progress indication

Actually, having nothing to do with the original OP's question, this issue with page numbering makes me wonder how publications are going to be cited as sources in the future. Anyone have further info?

The only thing that I can think of is by last TOC entry / heading and paragraph numbering from that point? (So, something like "Chapter 9; paragraph 142".)

Another possibility is something like the Kindle's location numbering scheme. They seem to be numbering the sentences in the book (though sometimes they count something beyond the visible sentences too). That makes the Kindle show a page something like "42 - 69 of 12345". This has the advantage that both the total value and the relative position don't change with font size, just how many "sentences" are on the current screen.

This also indicates a way to get rid of the page numbers displayed on the screen, which many readers hate and are the worse single feature of ADE:
Quote:
Each page element must have a name attribute that indicates a page name and href attribute that indicates a reference to the first piece of content on that page. XPointer can be used to allow referencing down to individual characters. The name attribute is often a number, but can be any string. For the cover, you may want to give it an empty string, so that no “page number” or name shows up next to the cover.
