The Magic of Oz

By L. Frank Baum (1856–1919)

Illustrated by John R. Neill (1877–1943)

With 71 black-and-white and 12 color illustrations, chapter head illustrations (edited), endpaper images, author’s introduction, and a map of the countries of Oz.

First published in 1919. The text is in the public domain worldwide. Illustrations are in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+70” or less, and in the USA.

----------------------
Ruggedo, former Nome King, tries to conquer Oz again with the somewhat grudging help of a Munchkin boy, Kiki Aru, who is illegally practicing the art of magic. Meanwhile, it is also Ozma’s birthday, and all the Oz citizens are searching for the most unusual present for the little princess. If you like magic, then this is a book for you. There’s magic on every page, and almost everybody in the story eventually is transformed into something else, or bewitched in one way or another. Even the wild animals in the great Forest of Gugu do not escape.

Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919) was an American author chiefly famous for his children’s books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels. He wrote 14 novels in the Oz series, plus 41 other novels, as well as many short stories, poems, and plays.

Even while he was alive, Baum was styled as “the Royal Historian of Oz” to emphasize the concept that Oz is an actual place. The illusion created was that characters such as Dorothy and Princess Ozma related their adventures in Oz to Baum themselves, by means of wireless telegraph.

For over a century, readers of all ages have loved these stories, and many of the Oz characters and situations have become a part of popular culture.
