Kindle in South Africa
Feel free to move this thread if I'm off base but I think this belongs in Dev.
My brother is going to South Africa for a few Months while his wife works on a Movie. I am currently investigating Wireless Coverage/Kindle versions support on my own. My Question is this, assuming he can get whispernet(type) coverage there, is there a way for him to access the US store from a South African friendly kindle version? Or is he best just to plan on using his laptop to purchase books from Amazon US and transfer via USB. also if he ended up with a Non-US region kindle are there any considerations for using it here (obviously 3G network is not the same) Thoughts? |

I have a US Model here and its working fine. You will have to pay a data charge of 1.99 for periodicals. Otherwise change the location to SA and you can still buy books just cost slightly more. |

South Africa probably has better wireless coverage than the US. It would have to be an AT&T Kindle that works on GSM/3G. Although there is one CDMA provider here, I don't think you can roam with them. So if he's got a US Kindle 2, I think he's out of luck. If it is a Kindle 3 or international Kindle 2 then it will work on at least 3 of the networks here. Kindle 3 has Wifi too which would make this something of a moot point.
Your brother might have to contact Amazon to let them know he's going to be travelling in South Africa if he doesn't want to pay the $2 delivery fee. |
