The League of Night and Fog by David Morrell is $1.99 at Amazon.

I haven't read this one yet, but David Morrell is a very good author of thrillers.

The Rasp is the first in Philip MacDonald's Anthony Gethryn series, which I am quite fond of. Most of the titles in this series don't seem to have made it into e-book yet (sigh!), and the ones that have are usually pretty expensive, especially in the US. So, even though £3.99 isn't an awesome sale price, I'm posting it anyway...

I wonder if this particular title fell out of copyright somehow in the US or something?

In the UK the Philip MacDonald titles that are available are pub by Collins Crime Club, with a few Collins Crime Club available in the US as well. (The Noose is $3.99 in the US, which I scarfed up a while back...)

But MacDonald didn't pass away until 1981, so his titles shouldn't be PD in the US, and most don't seem to be. I wonder if Spitfire Publishers LTD really have rights to this edition, which was pub 2 days ago, or if it's somehow in the PD for some other reason.

Maybe someone else knows more?

According to Wikipedia, it was published in the UK in 1924 and in the US in 1925. If that is correct and if, and only if, it's US copyright was formally renewed in 1953 then it would be still under copyright in the US today. If the US publication date for copyright purposes was actually in 1924 then it would be in the public domain. Also, if the renewal failed to happen during the last year of the original copyright or if that renewal contained critical errors, it would, again, be in the public domain in the US.

Formal renewal was critical to extending the copyright in the US. The oldest works that were automatically "grandfathered" in to the new copyright terms date from 1964. Earlier works were only grandfathered if their original copyright has been properly extended by formally renewing the copyright, which could be done only during the last year of the original copyright.
