Fallout from new Kindle line
Looking at the incredible low price of the cheapest Kindle out today ($79), not to mention the Kindle Fire, I would be surprised if six months from now they have any e-reader competitors left, in the US anyway, beyond B&N and Apple. Any thoughts?

My thoughts are that I'd better speed up getting my latest book ready for the Kindle store.
I am a big fan of competition when it leads to multiple options and lower prices. I admit I am slightly worried about the possibility of a monopoly emerging, but Amazon is doing well because they are offering good products at lower prices, so I can hardly begrudge them success. I think the end game is going to be free hardware, and companies will be competing on the delivery of content. Of course Amazon looks to be well-equipped for that as well. |

Yeah, I'm not sure what B&N can do to compete with that.

B&N are going to have to drop the Nook Color (or its replacement) to $199.
The Kindle Touch without special offers is $139, same as the Nook Touch. A $40 discount for screen saver adds is a very good deal from Amazon, so B&N may have to do something similar. |

I don't know, it's $79 with ads, and I wouldn't get anything at any price with ads. Also, the old Nook is $89 right now, isn't it? With no ads?

There will always be those people who just won't buy a Kindle because they don't like Amazon, and those who won't like that it doesn't read ePub.

The old Nook is Vizplex, not Pearl. The issue isn't Nook or Kobo; it's the other vendors. A $79 advertised price is going to wreck havoc at retail. |

I would like to see how the other manufacturers are going to compete (or try to) with this. I'd like to see the next Nook Color be on the cheaps rather quickly.

Why would you consider apple as plausible competition? iBooks hasn't been setting the world on fire.

It was a well done presentation with the products coming one after another. This is a pretty awesome line up coming out all at once. Not for everyone, I understand, but still, three or four (depending on how you consider no 3g vs 3g) models at 8 different price points all at one time is pretty cool. |

So far B&N has been kind of ignoring the ad-version of the Kindle. Dunno about that. |

That's dead easy... they remember that the US is only a part of the world and actually supply the rest of us with a choice... Amazon are currently only offering the cheapest and least of the new Kindles outside the US...
