My fist reader was a gen using mobi.
They the french publishers wakes up, and decides to use ePub.
So I had to convert....

Having only one format would make everyone's life easier. And no DRM of course.
We should be able to read any books from any shop on any reader.

Perhaps. But, anyplace I have bought an ebook other than Amazon, such as an author site or publisher site they always seemed to have the Kindle and ePub versions... so, I have not lost anything whatsoever by having a device that doesn't support ePub.

No, problems happens when you have a kindle and feels like getting a non kindle device as your new e-reader, or you have and Sony feel like getting a kindle. Problem is that the first choice you make will affect your future buying decision.

You can't go from one to the other without having to go though the mess that is converting.

People always seem to forget that when Kindle came out, ePub was barely starting out as a viable format. The ePub initial release was in September 2007, and Kindle came out in November 2007.

True. But that was also true for the sony that came out before the kindle. And they did the switch. So did bookeen for the gen3.
We're not in 2007 anymore, this is 2011. The end of format war and DRM is long overdue.
