Does anyone else experience bad font rendering in AZW3 files?

Both fonts are set on same size and same boldness 5, notice how bookerly in azw3 looks super wide and spacious, whereas in kfx it looks perfect.

Is this the norm? Or is the fault on my end?

The reason for the difference in the spacing of the letters is because KFX supports kerning were KF8 does not support kerning.

Actually nothing to do with KFX and KF8 files/formats. It's purely an Amazon decision on how the rendering is done. They could easily have any Kindle eink or App that supports KFX support the same features in KF8. The source is usually the same. See also epub2 vs kepub on the Kobo.

It's a marketing decision.

For Amazon, it's a control issue. Amazon wants to control your eBooks with KFX and a new DRM.

I appreciate the ‘control’ Amazon has applied with KFX. KF8 did not do much to deliver a consistent reading experience across platforms, much less between eBooks on the same platform. It’s not ‘marketing’, either: it provides a better reading experience than what existed before.

At the expense of the user's rights to have DRM free eBooks where the publishers requests no DRM.

True, but common practice is to download a DRM-free file from the bookseller web site, in the case of Amazon, this is a DRM free .azw3 file.

I am not sure if that's similar case to the OP's case, but on 4PDA there was a discussion about Bookerly. After 5.13.2 Amazon changed the hinting mechanism of the fonts to autohint, leaving the hinting to reader, while they stripped the fonts out of their native hinting instructions.

You could probably find the old Bookerly font and try use it as external one to see if this will fix it, or problem is with the new hinting mechanism.
