Hey there, Whenever I try and use this jailbreak, the bin file is immediately deleted upon unplugging my kindle touch, and the "Update your Kindle" Button is greyed out. I am currently running Kindle Touch Version 5.3.7.3. I had this same issue on all older versions of the firmware except 5.1.2, however on such versions Amazon has dissabled internet. Any advice?

@setlucas: You're doing something wrong. Make sure you're following the instructions from the Install section of this very thread to the letter. And that whatever you're using to unpack zip archives isn't doing stupid crap behind your back.

(Just double-checked on a Touch on 5.3.7.3, everything's fine).

Thanks a lot for this jailbreak!

I have installed it on my Kindle PaperWhite 4 (2018) WiFi, 8GB (G000PP) and it works great. Finally, I can customize the device so that the PDFs are easier to read.

Regarding USBNetwork:

I have installed it and I can successfully activate UN and reach the device. However, it always prompts for an SSH password. Regardless whether the WiFi is on or off (by default I always turn it off). The telnet port is closed. Any ideas how could I login into the device?

I wanted to adjust the configuration, such that I can use public keys for authentication, but I can't get it to compile, because I am lacking a lot of PW2 binaries (not included in the package sources or the official repo).

Thanks in advance!

@LiquidBrain: Read USBNetwork's README.

In its default state, it'll *prompt* for a password, but will accept anything.
That said, that stops being the case once you enable SSH over WiFi.

You certainly don't need to build anything anywhere to setup shared key authentication (again, the peculiarities of the Kindle setup vs. standard OpenSSH locations are detailed in the doc), so I'm a bit confused as to what exactly you're trying to achieve .

I found a tutorial in German which uses a Javascript implementation of a script by Belkaar for getting the password based on the device serial number.

Now I can login

Which means you indeed skipped reading the docs and enabled SSH over WiFi (telnet being down was the first hint, though ;p) .

(Sidebar: kindletool info. But even that may be moot on newer devices, because the *account* is locked).

Thank you for answering NiLuJe.

It did prompt me for a password, but it didn't accept any password I used (empty string, standard passwords like "root", "admin", "pass", etc.).

Regarding the paths, the readme refers to usbnet/etc/config and usbnet/etc/authorized_keys, so I assumed these files are included in the USBNetwork's .bin file.
  1. Are these meant to be files on the Kindle filesystem?
  2. Are these files accessible through the standard mass storage USB interface? I thought that it could be just usbnet directly in the root of the USB storage, but I wasn't sure.
  3. Can I access Kindle's root filesystem without a shell?

EDIT:

That's odd, because did not enable WiFi on my device. I always kept it off (flight mode), just to prevent unwanted connection to Amazon servers.

You are definitely not meant to mess with the innards of the .bin .

The paths are relative to the USB root (i.e., what you see over mass storage), hence the distinct lack of initial / .

So that'd be a resounding yes to 2., and as for 1., they resolve to /mnt/us/usbnet/... from inside the Kindle's OS.

About 3., sky's the limit on a jailbroken device (once you know that the rootfs is mounted RO for safety, a fact made abundantly clear on your first connection to a login shell), but for what I think you're asking, essentially no .

Perhaps I have misunderstood the documentation. My WiFi has been disabled all the time after the jailbreak and I only used USB connection.

Regardless, all is working now. Thanks again.

Oh, it was in the moderation queue, I failed to notice the bright green square, my bad ;p.

I specifically meant the SSH over WIFi *setting*, specific to USBNet, not the actual state of WiFi on your device.

(Enabling this disables passwordless logins & telnetd, because, err, WiFi . And as that's a switch flipped at the sshd level, it'll affect both wired and wireless connection attempts.)
