Brontė, Emily: Wuthering Heights. v1. 27 Jul 2021

BY SPECIAL REQUEST:

Wuthering Heights
by Emily Brontė (1818–1848)

With “Biographical Notice”
and “Editor’s Preface”
by Charlotte Brontė (1816–1865)

An iconic classic of English literature, blending realism, romance and the Gothic. This tale portrays Catherine and Heathcliff, their all-encompassing love for one another, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them both.

Returning from Liverpool, Mr. Earnshaw brings with him a dirty, ragged, black-haired child called Heathcliff, and sets into motion a tale of destructive passions. The book’s two locations, the genteel Thrushcross Grange and the wild Wuthering Heights, serve as backgrounds matching to the characters of their occupants, as they struggle to gain the upper hand in marriage and power. All the while, the ghosts of the past seem to drive revenge rather than inspire forgiveness.
(—Summary adapted from Manybooks and Standard Ebooks)

==========
Wuthering Heights was first published in 1847. A second edition was published post-humously in 1850, considerably edited by Emily’s sister, Charlotte. This ebook follows the text of the first edition, with corrections to obvious printer’s errors.

This ebook includes Charlotte Brontė’s “Biographical Notice” from the 1850 second edition, clarifying the Brontė sisters’ authorship of various books published under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. It also includes her “Editor’s Preface” to that edition.

Some footnotes are available to explain some of the Yorkshire dialect. (Advice to the first-time reader: sound the language out phonetically to get the sense of it.)

==========
Emily Jane Brontė (30 July 1818 – 19 December 1848) was an English novelist and poet who is best known for her only novel, Wuthering Heights, now considered a classic of English literature. She also published a book of poetry with her sisters Charlotte and Anne titled Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell with her own poems finding regard as poetic genius. Emily was the second-youngest of the four surviving Brontė siblings, between the youngest Anne and her brother Branwell. She published under the pen name Ellis Bell.

Thank you so much for making this GrannyGrump. I'll read the Biographical Notice and Editor's Preface tonight or tomorrow, but save the book for the autumn.
Years ago, I read a hardback Regency Edition of Wuthering Heights which gave no indication of being abridged; I later discovered that it was, savagely. So I look forward to reading the full book.
