Calibre 0.7.21, conversion issues.

Not fully verified: When converting an (English) HTML (Zip) ebook to EPUB, it appears that the fancy typographical symbols like
… “ ” ’
aren't making the conversion; they just vanish. I looked at some previously converted ebooks, and they appear to have been converted at the time.

I've left all conversion settings at defaults.

Consistent (and worked with 0.7.20):
Select more than one TXT or HTML (Zip) ebooks, attempt to convert to EPUB. Every single one throws up its own message box error.

ERROR: Conversion Error: <b>Failed</b>: Convert book 1 of 2 (eidolons)

Here's an example from a pair of TXT ebooks I just dragged and dropped, then tried to convert, just to keep things simple:

Code:
Convert book 1 of 2 (eidolons)
Python function terminated unexpectedly
(2, 'No such file or directory') (Error Code: 1)

The answer to the missing characters is due to character encoding, read the FAQs here, specifically part 2.

The second part of your question will require someone else to answer.

There is a bug in 0.7.21 that broke bulk conversion of books without covers. Add a cover and the bulk conversion will work.

As for missing apostrophes, see http://calibre-ebook.com/user_manual...r-smart-quotes
