Cannot see books on the device and cards

I have downloaded today the latest version (0.7.22) of Calibre and now the software have problem to communicate with my Sony PRS-505 (actually copy the books but cannot display those in the memory cards or in the device memory).

This is the message:

The message means that the file M:\metadata.calibre is read-only for some reason. Calibre needs to be able to write to that file.

The file can become read-only for several reasons, most of which have to do with problems on the card. You should check the card. Make sure calibre is not running, plug in the device, right-click on M: (assuming it is still M

, choose 'Properties', then 'Tools', then 'Check the drive for errors'. Check the box that tells Windows to fix the errors.

After that finishes, try calibre again. If the error still happens, stop calibre, then delete the file M:\metadata.calibre (and only that file).

Mmm, still doesn't work.

I cannot see from Calibre both the device memory and both the SD and the sony cards.

I execute exactly how you say.

So, you no longer get the error?

Run calibre's 'debug device detection' as described here and post the results.

Also, hard-reset your device. (Not reformat, I mean force it to turn off completely, then restart.)

OK, so calibre sees the sony. The next step is to run calibre in debug mode and see what happens.

Make sure the reader is unplugged. Then Open a command box (start, run, cmd) and type

Code:

calibre-debug -g > caldebug.txt

Plug in the reader and wait until calibre detects it (around 10 or 15 seconds). Quit calibre and post the contents of the caldebug.txt file.

I asked, because he asked you to run calibre-debug -g > caldebug.txt and after the gui came up to connect your reader, wait until it recognizes it then quit calibre and post the contents of the caldebug.txt file not what showed in the cmd window.

As dwanthny says, we need the content of the caldebug.txt file.

What might be silly question: is that card write protected? Clearly the operating system is refusing to allow it to be written. Another possibility: is the card formatted in FAT mode (you can see this on the properties window), and if so, do you have a lot of files in the root of the card? FAT-formatted cards have a very small limit for files in the root. You should use sub-folders.

I cannot access also to the main memory of the reader, not only the cards memory. But although I cannot see the contents of the internal memory and the 2 cards, I can copy new books in each memory I choose.

About the caldebug.txt file, sorry I'm a newbie, but where can I find it?

Can you access main memory of the reader via Windows explorer? By access I mean write a file to main memory, read that file, then delete the file.

1) Using windows explorer, can you copy the file M:\metadata.calibre to M:\metadata.calibre.copy? Please do not assume you can do it. Try it.

2) If the answer is 'Yes', then using notepad, can you open M:\metadata.calibre, add 1 space to the end of the first line, then save it back to exactly the same file?

3) Are you running any file synchronizer programs?

4) Please post the caldebug.txt file.
