Yes, it was Tyre. Dido was the daughter of the King of Tyre, but had to flee to Carthage, where she became queen and found love and finally killed herself.

This gives you 7 points, one more than pdurrant, and you are the rightful winner.

The two solutions that no one found was:
The Dwellers of London were, according to Carr, called fenmen, named so after the swampy region, the fenlands or the fens, from where they came. Can anyone from the UK confirm this? I thought that the fens were north of London?

The angel that bears a spear was, according to Milton, Ithuriel.

Congratulations. This riddle is not an easy one. I didn't understand a thing of it when I read Hag's Nook a couple of years ago.

Thank you for that. I wouldn't have guessed Tyre if you hadn't given the clue of its starting with T - I just remember that she had come from somewhere else and then founded Carthage.

Okay here's a quick quiz for people to knock over:

1. Which fictional character had a manion at West Egg, Long Island?
2. Which Ernest Hemingway novel was published after his death?
3. Which spy novelist once called James Bond “the ultimate prostitute”?
4. Who won a Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Caine Mutiny?
5. What was the name of the Trojan lover of Helen of Troy?
6. Where does a librocubicularist read?
7. Which painter was the subject of Somerset Maugham’s book The Moon and Sixpence?
8. What was the occupation of Oscar Madison in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple?
9. Name the suburban housewife and mother of three who wrote The Feminine Mystique.
10. Which English author spent a few months of 1922 in the coastal town of Thirroul, south of Sydney?

The Fens, also known as the Fenland(s), are a naturally marshy region in eastern England, the county of Lincolnshire probably being most associated with this. I'm not aware of any connection to London - maybe in the early days of London there were swampy areas that took this name?

2. A Moveable Feast?

I need to read some more Hemingway. One of these years. I think 2014 is looking like a good year for reading things I should have read.

No, not A Moveable Feast or The Garden of Eden.

I have to confess that the question came from my game of Trivial Pursuit, so of course there could have been other works published after the one listed on the card. Sorry if this one has caused confusion.

Our game rules have always been that it's the questioner's source that's used, regardless of the accuracy. There is just too much conflicting info out there. No harm, no foul.

Thanks Stitchy. I'll give it a few more hours in case a Hemingway buff jumps in, but it looks as if you will be the winner anyway, so start preparing your quiz!
