Time Period Nominations & Vote • May 2018

Help us select what the MR Literary Club will read in May 2018!

This is a special Time Period month in that it is the final one in its cycle as we're down to the last remaining option. Thus, there is no need for a vote to determine a time period first.

The category for this month is:

Time Period Finale, 1501-1800

Nominations can be set in and published in any time period, but should be written during this time period.

Detailed nominating and voting guidelines can be found here. Simply put, nominations are open for four days and each person may nominate up to two literary selections which will go automatically to the vote. Voting then opens for four days and each person votes by post, receives a number of votes equal to the number of nominations minus one and may give each nomination up to two votes. Any questions, feel free to ask.

We hope that you will read the selection with the club and join in the discussion.

The floor is now open!

I’ll start with Absalom and Achitophel by John Dryden. Published in 1681, it is a powerful political poem dealing with a critical battle between Charles II and the English Parliament concerning the succession to the English throne. Parliament wished to exclude the brother of Charles (later James II) in favour of the king’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth. The Earl of Shaftesbury was the primary supporter of the Duke.

Dryden took the side of the king and wrote this withering satire attacking
Shaftesbury. It is 1031 lines long and written in brilliantly energetic heroic couplets.

An intriguing suggestion, fantasyfan.

My first nomination is The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole published in 1764.

From Amazon US:
Quote:
On the day of his wedding, Conrad, heir to the house of Otranto, is killed in mysterious circumstances. His calculating father Manfred fears that his dynasty will now come to an end and determines to marry his son's bride himself - despite the fact he is already married. But a series of terrifying supernatural omens soon threaten this unlawful union, as the curse placed on Manfred's ancestor, who usurped the lawful Prince of Otranto, begins to unfold. First published pseudonymously in 1764, purporting to be an ancient Italian text from the time of the crusades, The Castle of Otranto is a founding work of Gothic fiction. With its compelling blend of sinister portents, tempestuous passions and ghostly visitations, it spawned an entire literary tradition and influenced such writers as Ann Radcliffe and Bram Stoker.
My second nomination is Evalina by Frances Burney published in 1778.

From Goodreads:
Quote:
Frances Burney's first and most enduringly popular novel is a vivid, satirical, and seductive account of the pleasures and dangers of fashionable life in late eighteenth-century London. As she describes her heroine's entry into society, womanhood and, inevitably, love, Burney exposes the vulnerability of female innocence in an image-conscious and often cruel world where social snobbery and sexual aggression are played out in the public arenas of pleasure-gardens, theatre visits, and balls. But Evelina's innocence also makes her a shrewd commentator on the excesses and absurdities of manners and social ambitions - as well as attracting the attention of the eminently eligible Lord Orville. Evelina, comic and shrewd, is at once a guide to fashionable London, a satirical attack on the new consumerism, an investigation of women's position in the late eighteenth century, and a love story.

Great nominations so far. I had wanted to nominate The Adventures of Nicholas Experience (or The Adventures of Mr. Nicholas Wisdom) by Ignacy Krasicki and written in 1776, which is regarded as the first Polish novel and sounds something like a less zany Candide, as the main character travels around the world and ends up in a fictional version of Japan where he experiences a rational enlightenment. However, I couldn’t find a sample to try and with two other strong candidates and only two nominations I had to pass.

So, I nominate The Monk by Matthew Lewis and The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. I’ll add more info about them soon.

More info on my nominations:

The Monk was first published in 1796. It's a Gothic horror classic set in a monastery in Spain, was very popular in its day and was controversial in its dealing with Catholicism. I really liked the sample I read of it. Goodreads

Quote:
Set in the sinister monastery of the Capuchins in Madrid, this is a violent tale of ambition, murder, and incest. The struggle between maintaining monastic vows and fulfilling personal ambitions tempts its main character into breaking his vows.
The Vicar of Wakefield was first published in 1766 by Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith and is a classic of 18th century literature. It centres on the ups, downs, adventures and travails of the Primrose family, headed by the vicar. I also liked the sample I read of this. Goodreads

Quote:
Oliver Goldsmith's hugely successful novel of 1766 remained for generations one of the most highly regarded and beloved works of eighteenth-century fiction. It depicts the fall and rise of the Primrose family, presided over by the benevolent vicar, the narrator of a fairy-tale plot of impersonation and deception, the abduction of a beautiful heroine and the machinations of an aristocratic villain. By turns comic and sentimental, the novel's popularity owes much to its recognizable depiction of domestic life and loving family relationships.

I’ve looked into all of them and will be happy with any but with only four votes, I may sound like an echo in giving one each to-

Absalom and Achitophel
The Castle of Otranto
The Monk
The Vicar of Wakefield
