Kept hearing Keown talk about it being 'hot and humid' throughout the match. Usually starting the sentence 'Its not an excuse but...'

Midges were only mentioned at the beginning of the match. Apart from a crap joke by Lineker later on.

In other news, a bizarre game from Columbia and Japan this morning. Columbia really shot themselves in the foot with that early (and deserved) red.

Oh Carlos Sanchez - at the Villa he was always likely to do something stupid and clearly he has not improved. An 11 man Columbia could have won that game.

Today we learned that; Uruguay and Portugal plan to bore us to death, Spain seem to believe the game is decided by pass count not goals, Iran and Morocco need to breed some strikers.

I assume it's quiet in this thread because I've somehow entered an alternative universe.

England looking quite good and scoring six in a match, Germany bombing out at the group stage; this can't be happening in this world, right?

I am still in shock. I watched the games side by side and it made for one wild bit of viewing. I assume that they will sack Low immediately.

I still quite like the looks of Croatia who seem to have a plan.

Could this end up being one of the most wide-open run-ins?

Germany gone - they were surprisingly poor
Argentina gone - in truth, France should have won by more seemed to switch off.
Portugal gone - not too much of a shock because Uruguay have quality forwards and defenders (though Uruguay need Cavani to be fit).
Spain gone - too lacklustre to break down a 10 man defence.

What odds on Brazil losing to Mexico?

Still have Brazil, France, Uruguay and Belgium in there. All on the same side of the draw though. Probably one of them in the final against England, Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia, Denmark , Colombia or Russia.

My guess at the moment would be a France v Croatia final.

Before they let this game to extra time, I would have bet on Croatia. But they are looking increasingly unconvincing.

I am so anti-England at this point because of the circus that is Harry Kane. You'd think the man was the second coming. I detest seeing teams reduced to one person. It doesn't help that he has so obviously made it about his own achievements the same way he did in the PL. Seriously, swearing on your child's head to take a goal away from your teammate? Really?

I am aggravated about Brazil for the same reason. Couthino is the engine of that team, but all anyone wants to talk about is Neymar.

For a couple of decades I've only watched video highlights of sport with the mute button pressed. I can't stand the bullshit. Even the sports results on radio are peppered with unintelligible waffle from coaches, players etc.

Once upon a time I thought Aus commentators were jingoistic; but today, they ain't got nothing on the Brits. What ever happened to quiet understatement. And they gong their 'stars' while they're still active - Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir Mohammed Farrah, etc.

Sadly my dream final of Russia v Japan ain't going happen
