"Amasis" is a copyrighted Monotype font. You won't find it legally available for free download anywhere. You can buy it from anywhere that sells fonts.

A modified version of the font is still copyrighted - it's what copyright law calls a "derived work". Barty is free to modify it for his own personal use, but it would be breaking copyright law if he were to give the modified version to anyone else.

It must depend on the modification. And you can of course distribute a patch file.

Certainly you can distribute a patch - just not the entire font file. And yes, if you were to create an entirely new font from scratch, which merely looked vaguely like Amasis, that would be fine, too. But to start with Amasis and modify it in a font editor - no. Whatever you did to it would still legally (to the best of my knowledge) be classed as a "derived work" and be protected by the copyright of the original font.

I just read that this is not derived from amasis but it's a mash up of different fonts that were chosen and modified to enhance their contrast on e paper....
so you can classify it as a new font I suppose as it's not derived from amasis...perhaps Last edited by hola!claude; 12-25-2012 at 06:46 AM. |

Barty is a member here. Have you tried to contact him?
He said previously that he couldn't post the font anywhere due to copyright as he only tweaked the original. |

Most font licenses do not allow modification for any reason, even personal use.

Unless you not only modify it but also rename it and then it is your own new font.
That's how the professional font designers do, so it is good enough for us too. Still, Amasis is the only font that seems to be removed by the request of the copyright holders almost everywhere, while all the other non-free fonts are not removed. That only proves that Amasis is the best and, indeed, the only font worth using. At least for me, it is. I use only Amasis and never any other font. |
