Free (nook/Kindle/Kobo/iTunes) Sorcerers of the Nightwing [YA Gothic Fantasy/Horror]
Sorcerers of the Nightwing by Geoffrey Huntington, a pseudonym of William J. Mann (ISFDB, Wikipedia), who happens to be a former New York Time Notable Book listee for his non-fiction, is 1st in his Ravenscliff series of YA paranormal gothic dark fantasy/light horror starring a plucky teenaged orphan discovering his magickal birthright and world-saving destiny, just like all the other paranormal series starring plucky world-saving teenagers discovering their super special powers, free courtesy of re-publisher Diversion Books, and originally out from HarperCollins' Regan Books imprint in 2002.
One of the blurbed newspaper reviews calls it "Buffy meets teenage Goosebumps", if that intersectionality happens to hold any particular appeal to you. Currently free @ B&N (also in the UK), Amazon (available to Canadians and in the UK), Kobo & iTunes (both available to Canadians). And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) ebook thread of the day. Enjoy! Description Devon March has grown up knowing two things: the monsters in the closet are real, and he is stronger than they are. But at fourteen years old, he still doesn’t know why. Now an orphan, Devon has been sent to live at Ravenscliff Manor with the foreboding Amanda Muir Crandall, her troubled nephew Alexander, and her feisty daughter Cecily. In the dark seaside mansion, plagued by ghosts, Devon learns the answers to at least some of his questions. Namely, his birthright as a sorcerer of the Order of the Nightwing, a three-thousand-year-old tradition of mysticism and magic, with roots that run deep in Ravenscliff Living in the most mysterious place in a small town filled with colorful characters, Devon will have to quickly decide who he can trust, as Ravenscliff’s worst nightmare is about to return – and Devon is the last line of defense. |

See, this is why I'm so confused:
We have this promotional smegma from noted author R.L. Stine: “The terror begins on page one and never stops! This is my kind of book – filled with magic and dozens of frightening surprises.” —R.L. Stine And yet, if Amazon's page count is correct (296), then wouldn't the terror stop at page 296 when one finishes reading the book? He boldly states that "...[terror] never stops!" If one agrees with Stine that the terror does, indeed, continue AFTER reading the book, will the terror at some point cease to exist? Too, since this is 'Book One,' what happens to the terror when/if starting 'Book Two'? Does the terror continue to escalate, if we agree with Stine's assertion that the terror continues and never stops? I think you can now fully appreciate my confusion in this matter. In the future, to avoid any further confusion, you may wish to read the reviews before posting a freebie here. I remain, Dr. Drib |

Quote:
Besides, for him, perhaps the terror never stops because he never finished reading the book because one of the "dozens of frightening surprises" just proved to be way too much. Why, just look at these four Amazon listings for books by "R. L. Stine (Author) & R. L. Stine (Author)", all released shortly after the original publication of this freebie. Clearly he's been living in a state of fear and trauma ever since, and has developed a split personality/tulpa-like doppelganger to compensate. See? The terror didn't stop and continues to this day. He's spaaaaawning!!!!! |

That fish looks like some kind of spawn of Dagon! (Get it??!!! - hahahaha.Ouch.)
It never occurred to me that a real possibility for the continued horror, as you mention, might lie in the fact that he never finished the book! And Anne McCaffrey, she must be related to Jimi Hendrix - thier post-mortem 'proflicness' is astounding! Anyway, I actually did pick up this book, along with the other titles. In fact, I think I'm going to start reading "The Beasts of New York (Published Version)" just as soon as I recover from seeing the picture of my Aunt Mildred Jepham (of Arkham) on that Stine cover! Her disappearance is still being investigated..... |
