Williams, Charles Walter Stansby: All Hallow's Eve. v1. 20 July 07
Charles Williams was a member of The Inklings, a Christian group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. His work is rich, combining both theological elements along with fantasy elements. He wrote in various genres, including drama, novels, poems, and criticicism, and was on the faculty at Oxford University. One one level, his novels are incredible fantasies; however, one can also view him as a Christian writer, working with theological issues within the framework of the elements of fantasy.
Here's one quote: "All Hallows' Eve is the story of a man and woman whose love was so great it could bridge the gap of death; of evil so terrible as to be unmentionable, of a vision so beautiful it must be true." NOTE: There were some horrible scanning errors on this – whoever scanned it. I spotted a number of them and corrected the ones I found. On a few occasions, there was some garbled text; again, I corrected those. However, I fear there may be MUCH more that I did not catch. I will correct any errors that are found, if you will keep track of them and email me or post them to this thread. I read Williams's novels when I was in my late 20s, while scrounging around for something "Tolkien-ish," as I lamented the passing of the Adult Fantasy Series edited by Lin Carter. I was not disappointed by Williams, although I will confess to readng him at that early age purely for the fantasy elements. For those of us who have grown over the years - and are now well out of puberty - I think Williams's writings can be appreciated within a much broader context now, a context of human growth. I hope you enjoy this. Don This work is assumed to be in the Life+70 public domain OR the copyright holder has given specific permission for distribution. Thanks, Roy. Unfortunately, I just discovered a problem
with "Descent Into Hell," the current one I'm working on. Whole words (and sentences?) are missing from this. (It came from Gutenberg.) I can go over the text tirelessly and correct messed-up words, but I really feel like I can't presume to know what is missing, or how much is missing.
I think this is a real problem with Gutenberg, in that some of their texts are suspect. I can't in all conscience continue this title, unless/until I find one that is useable and faitful to the text. It's pretty shoddy work, whoever uploaded it and didn't check it, or didn't check it thorougly enough. I'll check on another version, but I'm wondering how many versions may have been leeched from Gutenberg, thus continuing the problem. Charles Williams is too important a writer not to have available reliable work from him available on the internet for all to read. Thank you, again. Don |
