Calibre on FreeBSD
Ok, Calibre works on FreeBSD except it doesn't seem to work with the device via devd. So I have to manually mount my Sony reader with with the CAM (common Access Method User Library) subsystem and the dev on a mount point to put books on it. This is all fine and dandy except I dunno how to deal with the metadata this way. I already have metadata on the device from past calibre usage on a Windows machine and adding a new metadata file for one book or a few books doesn't seem like a good idea. I admit I don't know how the metadata file works to well so I'm a bit confused. Maybe you guys can give me some tips on how to manage it manually ? Otherwise I'll just have to load the new books on manually with no metadata (hence no grouping via tags etc..). I will say I have donated money to the Calibre project in the past but I will not do so in the future until it is fully working on FreeBSD. I also have ideological problems with the GPLv3 license that Calibre is licensed under. I like the BSD, MIT, ISC and Apache OpenSource licenses but not the various iterations of the GPL.
My system : FreeBSD blackhole.hvc.rr.com 8.1-RELEASE FreeBSD 8.1-RELEASE #9: Tue Nov 23 22:19:28 EST 2010 kevin@blackhole.hvc.rr.com:/usr/src/sys/i386/compile/ELITE i386 Last edited by KevinBurke; 12-01-2010 at 03:33 PM. |

One obvious solution , it seems, is to take my entire book library off my device and put it back through Calibre, in FreeBSD, add the new metadata file and put all the books (including the new ones) back on the device, from the calibre library, manually . However, this be would tedious and tiresome since I have 139 books on my device. Do you guys have any other ideas ?

I'm assuming that you are brining this up because it will prevent you from developing the necessary code to support FreeBSD. That is your choice but do be aware that it could be a considerable amount of time before this enhancement is fulfilled. |

I have no intention of ever writing code to support FreeBSD. I will however accept (GPLv3 licensed) patches.

[Offensive language deleted - MODERATOR] Here is the skinny : In the beginning, Linux was pretty cool. It was free (always a plus), had a rapid development cycle, a moderately knowledgeable user base, and a funny mascot. Then the pinheads arrived. I don't have an issue with Linux so much as the user base it attracts. More and more I'm reading about and experiencing what I like to refer to as the "dumbing down of Linux". Now you may say, "Well this is to be expected... Hell, look at the Windows user base." Yes that's true, but the Windows user base doesn't claim to be "l337", a "hax0r", or anything of the sort. Linux users do and often. I have these simple beliefs: 1) The root partition should be small... painfully so. 2) /var is not for web servers or their content. 3) The kernel has one job: to keeping the system up, running and stable, not to serve web content - I don't care if it's faster from the kernel. 4) Really understanding IP and the applications built upon it is a requirement before you are "1337" 5) I don't care how fast something is, if it comes at the cost of security or stability it's stupid. 6) *BSD is the way. Sounds like someone drank the kool-aide.
I haven't used BSD since I downloaded it onto 27 3.5" floppies via a 14.4k modem. Wasn't nuts about it then. But I'm glad you like it. |

So, this threads boils down to someone demanding changes that ony he can see the need for and then wildly spewing flames when noone is interested? Why is it we get more and more of those recently?

Troll alert!
Comment: when Bill (Joy) and I wrote ex/vi at Berkeley back in 1975/6-ish, Ken (Thompson) at first refused to let us put it in Unix V6. He thought it was too big and (as he later admitted) not 'geeky' (my word) enough. The Pascal IDE we built in/around vi never was accepted. And you should have heard the comments about emacs. Sounds like that sort of opinion is still alive and well. Although Ken would never have used the phrase 'X is for bitches'. |

Never thought I'd hear vi accused of not being geeky enough
Considering I do all my development in vim, I owe you a vote of thanks |

the GPL is for moronic losers like Kovid Goyal
The only moron I see here is you :
"Riehle's research plays off the excellent analysis of The 451 Group's Matt Aslett on the rise of permissive licensing in open-source communities. As Aslett points out, GPL licensing has been in relative decline compared to Apache- and MIT-licensed projects. http://blogs.the451group.com/opensou...ive-licensing/ The reason, as Riehle writes, is clear: "Projects that don't choose a permissive license are at a Darwinian disadvantage over those that do because the later can receive contributions from a broader set of enterprises than the former." Not so surprisingly, this holds true even for source code repositories: GitHub has been beating SourceForge, Google Code, and other source code repositories by being even more open. Openness matters. Even in the land of open-source software, where openness is the default." http://eaves.ca/2011/06/14/how-github-saved-opensource/ " http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06...nness_problem/ Do I even have to state outright that the Apache and MIT licenses are more closely related or in the same class of licenses as the BSD licenses and the ISC license ? Obviously anyone who chooses the GPL license is a moron so you are the moron here not me. Anyway I do use Calibre on windows. Calibre might be able to function 100% on FreeBSD by fiddling with dbus and hald permissions or whatnot. I know I tried but it proved to be too much of a pain in the ass. So I now use Microsoft windows and FreeBSD together. My setup is that I use Microsoft windows with Xming and putty to connect to my FreeBSD box and xforwarding is turned on so my FreeBSD applications which are GUI based run on my windows box transparently as well as being able to use the console shell and related console programs. So I use windows for applications such as calibre. I get the best of both worlds. Obviously the GPL and Linux are a failure. The GPL is in decline compared to the MIT and Apache licenses due to the fact that it is at a Darwinian disadvantage and people have been proclaiming the 'year of the linux desktop' for about a decade now but that never came to fruition as Microsoft Windows and MacOSX have a much bigger market share on the desktop market. The desktop market has rejected Linux. Do I even have to mention that the core of MacOSX is significantly based off of FreeBSD ? So BSD is more successfull than Linux on the desktop and the *BSDs are technically superior on the server market as well. Linux may rule supreme in the supercomputer world but that is deprecated due to cheaper cluster solutions where both the BSDs and Linux are used. So Linux is for losers : http://www.forbes.com/2005/06/16/lin..._0616theo.html Linux and the GPL licenses are for loser morons. So the facts of reality show that Kovid Goyal is a moron and that Kevin Burke is not a moron. Face the facts that us BSD people are elite and you GPL linux loving people are losers.
