Saving a modified epub in Sigil correctly
Using Sigil 0.9.9 on my Windows box, I have edited some text in an epub. I have put span tags around some words and put CSS into its css file for grey background.
Sigil shows those words with grey background. Now, when I save this file with Sigil and open it using Firefox's EPUB Reader, that part is not shown with grey background. Did I miss anything to achieve the effect of saving my modifications? |

I don't think this is to do with Sigil not saving the changes you have made but whether the changes could achieve what you expect.
AIUI "background" is normally applied to block level elements such as p or h1 etc, not to spans which are inline. Can you post an example of both the markup and the css. BobC |

By clearly defining the purpose and goals of your business and how you want people to use your site, you will be more equipped to respond to design and development suggestions. <span class="highlight">Every issue that comes up</span> in the development process can then be evaluated against the primary goals of your marketing.
span.highlight { background: #ccc } and in Sigil this does achieve the desired effect |

It may be that the FireFox Epub reader does not support that mark-up. Or perhaps, there are errors (even minor ones) in your css file. Some readers/browser engines can completely ignore the css if parser errors exist.
To test the latter, try creating an inline style attribute on the span tag and remove the class. Does the Firefox reader now show the background or does it just ignore that mark-up? |

Perhaps FireFox gets a version from a cache of some kind?

BTW: Loading this tiny test case in Safari and Firefox shows both browser engines support background color on a span.
Code:
<html> <head> <title>huh</title> <style>span.highlight { background: #ccc };</style> </head> <body> <p>By clearly defining the purpose and goals of your business and how you want people to use your site, you will be more equipped to respond to design and development suggestions. <span class="highlight">Every issue that comes up</span> in the development process can then be evaluated against the primary goals of your marketing.</p> </body> </html> |

Does the Firefox ePub reader use a default CSS file? Like some devices, that would override the "publisher's layout" unless specifically selected.

Firefox EPUB Reader and SumatraPDF does not show my grey background, while Icecream ebook reader shows it. For the time being this solution of using another ebook reader software suffices, but it would be interesting to know why Firefox EPUB Reader and SumatraPDF do not let through my custom CSS. |
