IF anyone wanted to know about the 13 superstitition, it dates back to Pope Clement V, and King Philip IV, the latter of which decided that the Knights Templar--the real ones, not the stuff of legend--had too much property, money, and (magic word) "treasure." (Plunder from the Crusades). King Philip (IV) sent orders, in secret, to all his bailiffs, across all of France, with orders not to open the instructions until a certain day. The orders were to arrest, torture, and obtain confessions from about 600 (?) of the men who were the heads of the Knights Templar, all across France. This order was (pretty miraculously, for 1307), carried out all at once: on Friday the 13th, October, 1307. Basically, he got all the false confessions; the confessions were to crimes of such a dreadful nature (I mean, they were doozies, including heresy--from a holy order, mind you) that the Pope, who was originally incensed at Philip's behavior, couldn't do much about it. Years followed in which those Templars who lived recanted their confessions, and other leaders in other countries ignored the arrest orders, but the power of the Templars was effectively forever broken. And thus, kiddies, came the "superstition" about Friday the 13th; from the deceit and betrayal by Philip of the Templars. So, less superstition than a type of pop culture that made its way into the public consciousness. One of those trivial little things that sticks in my brain which makes my other half eye-roll frequently. NOW, Is there some reason why television stations persist in putting stupid reporters in front of empty buildings at 10:00 at night, "live from the scene," when it's obvious that whatever happened there happened at least 6 hours ago? I know this isn't the V&R thread, but, trying to play along in the spirit of OT-ness. Hitch |

Is a time traveler cursed by a sense that everything is happening now? This came to mind while I was watching an episode of "Doctor Who" where Rose returned to the present from a time in the distant future where The Doctor is in the middle of a battle. Yet, despite it being so far in the future, to Rose The Doctor is fighting right now.

I love that episode! There might be a difference in the experience between a newbie like Rose at that point in the story, and a seasoned time traveller like the Doctor.

I was reading today's Garfield strip and there was a mention of working dogs. This led me to ponder: Why don't you hear of working cats?
Could it be that working works against the nature of cats? Thinking about it, this seems to be the typical day of a cat: Wake up, eat, sleep, lay around, sleep to recover from a hard day of resting, chase something, go to "owner" to have ears scratched, sleep to recover from actually moving, eat, lay around, resting to recover from the energy needed to eat and lay around, go to sleep for the night, have dreams about laying around. |
