^ It will hopefully improve with firmware updates. At least there is an option out of the box now.
I am right now trying to gather my courage to root something for the first time in my life: the Nook ST. It's a horrifying prospect for me, as so many things can go wrong when you have no clue about what you are doing. |

Frankly it sounds like the install of APKs works because they forgot to disable it, rather than that it is a feature they intended.
