Leaked Hatchette document outlining why they are relevant

I found this interesting, particularly as a number of authors are now going down the self publish path.

http://www.digitalbookworld.com/2011...-are-relevant/

Hatchette talks about their role of providing the author with access to the widest possible customer base possible, yet mentions DRM and territorial restrictions almost in the same breath.

Worth a look as it provides some insight to how a mainstream publisher currently considers their role in the economy to be.

Most of what they say is the role of a publisher they haven't done for about 10 years now, maybe more. And once the last of the book shops goes the same way as the record shops, there will be even less point to them.

I spent more time reading the comments under the article. THOSE can be very insightful.

I don't see how their last point of territorial controls is a plus for authors. Right now, if an author doesn't have a publisher deal for ebooks in a foreign country, the author has lost potential sales. That's not true of pbooks, because there's no restrictions on pbook buyers buy copies from retailers in other countries.

Exactly, bgalbrecht. If I was published I wouldn't care WHO bought my book or where they lived. Let a baboon from Bangladesh buy it for all I care. (Used only because I like the sound of the B's) Why restrict ebook buyers?

Let a buffoon of a baboon babbling in a balloon on his way from Bangladesh to Bombay to buy a book for his Nook.

How's that for some B's?

This is not correct. Most print book agreements between authors and publishers limit geographical rights and the distributors and some retailers do try to enforce it. Where they can't enforce it is in the used book market. That it is not enforced doesn't mean there are no restrictions; it means just that the restrictions aren't adhered to.

Nine times out of ten, I can purchase a paperback but not the ebook version unless I "manipulate" the point of origin.

Agreed. There were several pbooks I couldn't buy on Amazon due to my location.

So why do they say "“Self-publishing” is a misnomer."? I mean, I care, I'm about to call myself a self-publisher. Let's see if I fit the bill.

1. Curator: We find and nurture talent.

Yeah, I'm definitely finding and nurturing my talents on a daily basis.

2. Venture Capitalist: We fund the author’s writing process.

Uh, yeah, I do that too. I call it "a day job".

3. Sales and Distribution Specialist: We ensure widest possible audience.

Huh. I was going to do that, too, by using sales to reduce the price on my books at keys times in order to reach a wide group of people. But I guess a flat NO COUPONS ALLOWED approach might work too... buh??

4. Brand Builder and Copyright Watchdog: We build author brands and protect their intellectual property.

Hey! Funny enough, I know how to do that too, and I also know how to do that without being a jerk and annoying my customer base. Swiffy!

Huh. So maybe "self-publisher" isn't a misnomer after all. But I've enjoyed this Dictionary Dance, so thank you, Hatchette.

I wonder what L. Ron Hubbard would've said about them claiming to fund the writing process.
