Exclamation Free (nook/Kobo) Chimera Vector [Australian Sci-Fi Supersoldier Conspiracy Thriller]

The Chimera Vector by Nathan M. Farrugia (ISFDB) is the 1st in his The Fifth Column series of genetically-engineered sci-fi supersoldier military conspiracy thrillers, free courtesy of publisher Pan Macmillan Australia's Momentum imprint.

According to the Momentum official website blog, this was iTunes Australia's featured Free Book of the Week last week, meant to coincide with the release of the latest-in-series, but expired from iTunes this morning and Amazon the day before.

However, you may still be able to pick it up via the two stores that have not yet updated their prices just yet.

Free for who knows how much longer @ B&N and Kobo (available to Canadians) until they do pricing catch-up.

ETA: This has become free again @ Kobo (available to Canadians) & Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK) and is newly free @ B&N UK (currently still expired in the main store, but may drop again). Grab it while it lasts!

ETA 2: Now back to free in all venues, including B&N main, iTunes (available to Canadians), and directly from the publisher (DRM-free ePub/Mobi bundle available worldwide).

Description
The Fifth Column: the world's most powerful and secretive organization. They run our militaries. They run our governments. They run our terrorist cells.

Recruited as a child, Sophia is a deniable operative for the Fifth Column. Like all operatives, Sophia's DNA has been altered to augment her senses and her mind is splintered into programmed subsets.

On a routine mission in Iran something goes catastrophically wrong. Bugs are beginning to appear in Sophia's programming and the mission spins out of control.

High-speed chases, gun fights, helicopter battles, immortal psychopaths, super soldiers and mutant abilities are all in the mix in this edge-of-your-seat action-packed techno-thriller.

Perfect for fans of Matthew Reilly, The Chimera Vector melds sci-fi with sizzling espionage action.

The main page says it's free but it costs $3.69 when you click to go to the books page. At least here in the US.

Huh. The Kobo servers do change over more quickly than I thought. I'd have imagined at least a 30 minute window, since I checked shortly before posting after 9pm here/midnight Eastern Time. Oh, well.

Perhaps try B&N? (But check your receipt after, just in case).

As on 110AM EDT, it's still free through B&N. (Had to wait for the receipt to go through - B&N is so slow with that.)

And thank you for posting! It sounds interesting.

Do you have an account with B&N? If you do then you just need to be signed in with your email and password and then click on the confirm button. I've never had any problems with security with B&N.

You have to have a credit card attached to your account to make any ebook purchases. (This includes using a gift card or grabbing a free ebook.)
I remember being annoyed with this when I first got my nook.

I have also never had any issues with security with them, but it is annoying for people who don't want to have a card attached.

True, but you have to have a ccn to access any ebook store even if the book is free so that they can add the book to your library(i assume). And while I don't give my ccn out to just any website I figure that they have to have some security on the big sites like B&N, Kobo, and Amazon.

Kobo doesn't, but they are pretty unusual in that respect.

-----------------
I've never had any security issues with B&N and I've had a card attached to my account since 2010.

That said, if you have a credit card gift card, you can attach that to the account and it should work. Not the best option, but if you have one with a few cents on it, it would allow you to have something on there just for the purpose of occasionally "buying" free books through them.

Pretty sure B&N uses your credit card info as part of the DRM scheme on (most of) their books. It's probably just easier to ask for it on all downloads.

It's not just a card, it's a currently valid card. If it's expired, you have to update it before they'll let you get a free e-book. I ran into that once, and it was really annoying.

Yes they do, but the really odd thing is I didn't have to update the info for the DRM stripping plugin. The DRM only uses the card number, NOT the expiration date. So why they're that anal about it is beyond me.

I've managed to accumulate a few VISA gift cards with less than a dollar remaining, but that don't actually expire for a few years. I attach those to accounts that I intend to use only for free books.
