Baring-Gould, Sabine: A Book of Ghosts. v1. 25 Jun 2018

A Book of Ghosts by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834 – 1924)

From the author whose works inspired, among others, noted ghost-story writer M.R. James: twenty-two charming ghostly narratives of the Victorian era. These are not tales of terror, but instead have the ambience of fireside reminiscences of a favorite old uncle. Some are creepy, some are sweetly sentimental, and several comic ghosts give a most entertaining performance.

****************
The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (28 January 1834 – 2 January 1924) was an Anglican priest, antiquarian and folklorist, novelist, and eclectic scholar. One of the most prolific and popular writers of the late Victorian period, he wrote more than 150 books and contributed countless magazine articles. His folkloric studies resulted in The Book of Were-Wolves (1865), one of the most frequently cited studies of lycanthropy; followed by numerous volumes on other arcane subjects. He is remembered particularly as a writer of hymns, the best-known being “Onward, Christian Soldiers.”

A Book of Ghosts was first published in 1904. The text of this book is in the public domain in countries where copyright is “Life+90” or less, and in the USA.

This ebook is based on transcriptions obtained from wikisource.org. Embedded font used for titling. Story title decorations are cross-linked to dynamic Table of Contents.

So, light up a candle, slip into that Victorian mood, and enjoy the read.
