I remember back years ago when The Exorcist movie came out. Many churches were telling their members to stay away. Then nobody could get into the theaters because they were always packed with parishioners from various religious denominations - the shows were all sold out.

Rarely does an attempt at shaming something ever work out the way the shamer intends. Every tried to go to a Chick-Fil-A? The lines at the drive-thru wrap around the building and down the block.

You are so right, Uncle Robin! Campion is lovely and Marsh's Alleyn is definitely worth reading. Let's not forget Father Brown. The list goes on, in terms of great UK mystery writers and their creations. Georges Simenon!

US: SS Van Dine, Carr, and did someone mention Erle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason? (And Bertha!).

So why would anyone want to read stories that are racist and antisemitic when there are much better stories to read that are neither of these things?

I’m calling foul here. You posted once, got a ton of responses from many members, and crickets from you. No further participation or comment. And yet, because you are unhappy with ONE poster, YOU derail your entire thread by deleting the original post. So much for everyone’s thoughtful contributions! Leave everyone to it? You’d already done that!

If you have an issue with a post or poster, report it. Don’t act as your own gatekeeper and denigrate the participation of the entire board.

ETA: There were twenty-four other posters. So much for all of them.

The series itself is stand alone(unless your very anal retentive).

The problem is that I've seen different lists of what to read before, during, and after. I don't know if there is one correct list.

From what I gather is that The Dark Tower series is tied into other books. Having such a list would be good to give everyone a chance to be complete if that's what's wanted.

Before chasing down every reference in the Steven King books, I would read the 7 book series, and if you want to continue, go from there. IMO.

Jon, have you read the series? If not, than when do you plan on reading it?
