Automatically Setting Date field to file creation date when importing.

Is it possible to automatically set the Calibre date field to equal the Windows file creation date (or modified date) when importing said file?

If that isn't possible, I could possibly edit the metadata after fact via a script. Is the easiest way to go about that to change the date in the OPF file? How do I refresh the metadata for the files afterwards?

Date is the date the Record was created in the Library (could even be an 'empty book' )
Last_modified is the date ANY data base entry for that book changes,

If you really need/want this to remain under YOUR control, you should create a custom column. I do this for Finished (reading) and Edited (when I clean, tweak and Validate ) YMMV

I am aware the Date column by default is just an indication of when the entry was created. I would like to change that behavior to being a value read from the imported file's date property. I'm referring to the OS's file system properties and not any existing data within Calibre.

I could create a custom column. But how would I get Calibre to populate it based on a file's system properties?

Created Date is only available on Windows/NTFS.

The GetFileName plugin runs when a book is added, it can store the file's Modified Date in a custom Date column ==>> Index of plugins

In case anyone else wants to manage metadata in an unusual way, Calibre's command line utilities are a good option if there's no other built in methods or add-ons available. In the end, that's what I used to change the data fields after importing the files to Calibre
