Alternatives to Writer2epub
Since there hasn't been much progress in the last months and from time to time some I have to export formats not supported by writer2epub, I thought it might be meaningful to collect alternatives to this plugin. So far I'm aware of
- odt-import in calibre, - writer2latex (http://writer2latex.sourceforge.net/), which provides an export-to-epub function and requires java, - eLAIX (http://extensions.libreoffice.org/ex...x/releases/4.1), which seems to have some problems with new versions of libreoffice, and - amanuensis (http://amanuensis.pagesperso-orange.fr/). Regards, Werner |

The Calligra Office Suite can export to epub. There is also an application dedicated to writing books, Author. Don't know about the quality of the epubs, but the software is open source and part of the KDE project.

Libreoffice 6 now seems to include a filter for exporting to epub.

LibreOffice V.6 has a very good export in ePub, both ePub2 and ePub3.
Under the menu File>Export As… you can find this option. The next version of Writer2ePub for LibreOffice will be just an helper for composing a good ePub, but the creation of the ePub itself will be done by LibO. Thanks for your interesting in W2e |

The best feature of Writer2epub is the cleaning of the css and text.
The export default gives me a horrible css, indentation in inches , (it's easy to turn them into em, but: inches?!?) and then there are all those spans with font size and so on. But is there really a need for a span for each paragraph? And is it necessary to specify what fonts do you use in every span? They pretend to make the ebook look exactly like the original text but odf is a format intended for printing, not for reading. I hope that the cleaning of the text will be preserved, my use is only personal, if I find an interesting book in public domain (in Italy LiberLiber is well known) I turn it into an epub to read it on the Kobo and this is the best tool around here. Thanks for this fantastic extension. Last edited by ps67; 01-29-2019 at 05:34 AM. |

So far, the Export function included in Libreoffice is not providing well-formatted epubs.
For me, writer2latex/xhtml gives still the best results. There's an option to add user-prepared style files, but I haven't figured out how to use it. Writer2epub is also quite good, but it seems that it does not turn character styles into proper <span> classes. There are also some problems, with tables in Libreoffice documents. For instance, the content of a cell can appear two or even more times in the exported epub. |

Shameless plug: if you're a Sigil user you could use my writer2latex-based ODTImport plugin.
The plugin comes with a custom stylesheet that you can fiddle with. For more information, see the plugin download page. |
