Friday's Question of the week 15th July 2011 ..
Did you know, today is St. Swithin's Day, a day on which people watch the weather for tradition says that whatever the weather is like on St. Swithin's Day, it will continue so for the next forty days.
There is a weather-rhyme is well known throughout the British Isles since Elizabethan times. St. Swithin's day if thou dost rain For forty days it will remain St. Swithin's day if thou be fair For forty days 'twill rain nae mair. dost = does thou = you nae mair = no more. Is it raining ? |

I suppose it has to do with the fact that at this time of the year there are sometimes weather blocks over the UK with prolonged periods of high pressure bringing hot, sunny weather. If there is no block, it is a fair bet that the usual British pattern of waves of rain coming in from the west will maintain itself.

I fear St. Swithin will verily apply to NC - fair today - and no rain expected for weeks to come.

Well, I'm going to have to pull out the iTouch and listen to Billy Bragg's ~St. Swithin's Day~ now.

It's already sprinkled once here this morning, and we have a 30% chance of rain for the rest of the day...but being as this is central Florida, that is our usual forecast for nearly every day until Thanksgiving.
