Chesterton, G.K.: The Ball and the Cross. 16 July 2007

Here's another of my favorite Chesterton Books. A Fantasy in the tradition of The Man Who Was Thursday.

Tells the story of two equally passionate men, yet complete opposites in worldview. A red hot Socialist who wrote a paper and published it, (The Atheist) meets a commited Scottish catholic Jacobite and they begin to argue maniacally about religion. (Both are sympathetically represented by Chesterton) They nearly come to blows over their irreconcilable differences and finally challenge each other to a duel with Swords.

The Police hear of it and try to arrest both men before they murder each other. So they band together and run for it, looking for a place to duel. They argue vociferously as they run for it and meet a bunch of people who either attempt to hinder them or try to help them duel (But for the wrong reasons) They become friends (of a sort) because they are apparently the only two people in England who care enough about the truth to put their lives on the line over it.

Funny stuff happens...

(Theres an excellent chapter at the beginning of the book where a mad scientist named Lucifer and a holy man named Michael fly around on a futuristic Sci-Fi airplane for awhile and say stuff... )

They end up (Well.. almost put a spoiler in sorry)

Good story.

Enjoy
