AZW to EPUB conversion - overlapping letters
When converting an AZW file to EPUB, the result in the viewer looks like the screenshot below.

I managed to solve this by a two step conversion AZW-MOBI-EPUB. Then the resulting EPUB looks fine.

Is there a setting somewhere to avoid the extra step?

I haven't tried viewing the EPUB on a reader so I don't know what happens there.

Check the HTML
You try might unzipping the epub and look at HTML files hiding inside for the defective one and the ok one and see how they differ. There is a program offered by Atlantis which makes it easy.

I suspect you will find the defective one full of unnecessary junk and the working one less so.

You can download epub-tweak by Atlantis Word Processor at:

http://atlantiswordprocessor.blogspo...-zip-file.html

This will let you open up any of the files that make up an epub very conveniently in Notepad or other text processor and make any changes you like and save them back together in the epub format. It will also let you look at them as HTML so you can see how different they are.

Or you can use the 'Tweak ePub' feature in calibre.

Or you can try setting the base font size and line spacing under convert books->look & feel.
Usually fixes it for me.
make the line spacing number 1 - 1.5 larger than the base font.

It looks like your paragraphs may be overlapping. Just for fun try checking the Insert blank line feature when converting from azw to epub.
