The Ottoman Cage is the second Inspector Ikmen title by Barbara Nadel. It’s $0.75 at Kindle US right now, which is an exceptionally nice price!

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GL441OU

Spoiler:
Quote:
Barbara Nadel's The Ottoman Cage is a spicy thriller set in Istanbul's back alleys.

Inspector Cetin Ikmen and forensic pathologist Arto Sarkissian have been friends since childhood, and their work together in Istanbul's criminal justice system has only served to cement their friendship. When they're both called to a flat to investigate the death of a twenty-year-old, there is no reason to think their relationship will alter.

The case, however, is a strange one. Ikmen learns from the neighbours that they have never seen the man enter or leave the flat. The only visitor they're aware of is a solitary, well-dressed Armenian. Stranger still is that the limbs of the body are withered, and the victim seems to have been kept prisoner inside a gilded cage. What is it that's making Ikmen's old friend Arto, himself an Armenian, especially uncomfortable about the case?

The townspeople of New Iberia, Louisiana, didn’t crucify Megan Flynn’s father. They just didn’t catch whoever pinned him to a barn wall with sixteen-penny nails.

Decades later, Megan, now a world-famous photojournalist, has come back to the bayou, looking for cop Dave Robicheaux. It was Dave who found the body of labor leader Jack Flynn. The sight changed the boy, shaped him as a man. And after forty years, Robicheaux is still haunted by the bizarre unsolved slaying.

Now Megan’s return has stirred up the ghosts of the long-buried past, igniting a storm of violence that will rip apart lives of blacks and whites in this bayou country. And for a good cop with bad memories, hard desire, and chilling nightmares, the time has come to uncover the truth.

I remember reading and liking a lot of Bill Crider's Sheriff Dan Rhodes series back in "real paper" book days. But I haven't read any of the three books in his Dr Sally Good series. And now two of the three are on sale for extra nice prices, so I will probably give them a try.

Jupiter's Bones is the eleventh in Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker/Riza Lazarus series. It's $0.99 in the US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001D23SZI
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/jupiter-s-bones

Spoiler:
Quote:
Preeminent astrophysicist Dr. Emil Euler Ganz vanished without any warning to his family or colleagues, only to reappear fifteen years later as "Father Jupiter," founder and charismatic leader of the scientific cult the Order of the Rings of God. Now he's dead—a vial of sleeping pills and an empty bottle of vodka standing near his lifeless body.

Was Ganz's death an accident? Suicide? Or did someone hasten Jupiter prematurely out of this world? These are the questions LAPD Lieutenant Peter Decker is determined to answer as he enters the cult's fortress-like compound. Meanwhile, the mysterious disappearance of an Order acolyte and a child turns an already volatile situation even uglier, and Decker will need the wisdom and support of his wife, Rina Lazarus, to defuse a ticking time bomb of jealousy, greed, and lies before it explodes, destroying a multitude of misguided adult lives and scores of innocent children.

The Ian Rutledge Starter contains, oddly enough, four books in the Ian Rutledge series by Charles Todd. But not the first four as you'd kind of expect, given the title. Instead, it has the first book (which won/was a finalist for a ton of awards), and then the eight, ninth, and tenth books. Go figure!

But in any case, it's on sale right now for $3.99 in the US, which is a great price if you need them all, and not bad even if you only need a couple.

The Ian Rutledge Starter contains A Test of Wills, A Long Shadow, A False Mirror, and A Pale Horse

The first eight books in Qiu Xiaolong's Inspector Chen series have dropped to £2.99 each in the UK. And the tenth is also £2.99, only at Kindle UK. And there is also an omnibus of the first three titles available for £3.99. These books are brutally expensive in the US, and almost never go on sale there, so if you live in or visit the UK, £2.99 is probably about as good as it's going to get.

The titles on sale right now are:
  • Death of a Red Heroine
  • A Loyal Character Dancer
  • When Red Is Black
  • A Case of Two Cities
  • Red Mandarin Dress
  • The Mao Case
  • Don’t Cry Tai Lake
  • Enigma of China
  • Hold Your Breath, China - Kindle UK only

Here are author/series links for the eight:

Chihuahua of the Baskervilles: A Mystery by Esri Allbritten is $1.99 on Amazon US.

"When the glowing form of a beloved deceased Chihuahua appears, is it a ghost, or is someone teaching a dead dog new tricks – like murder?

Tripping Magazine is a quirky low-budget magazine that reports on travel destinations for believers in the paranormal. A few fake ghosts away from throwing in the towel, the Tripping staff get the tip of a lifetime when they get a call from Charlotte Baskerville, the rich founder of a clothing company for small dogs. Charlotte thinks that her Chihuahua, Petey, has come back from the dead, and she's desperate for someone to come verify his appearances.
The magazine's three-person reporting team travels to Manitou Springs, Colorado, sure that the ghostly dog will be a work of fiction. But, when they arrive, they see evidence of Petey with their own eyes. And he's not just floating by – he's howling advice and spelling out threats with tiny paw prints. Is the ghost real, or is the whole phenomenon an elaborate ruse?
The Tripping team must navigate the kooky world of coffin races, scheming husbands, and doggie fashion to solve the mystery – and get their story written at the same time."

I've seen a lot of things on my wishlists dip to £2.99 over the last few months, for example A Midsummer's Equation by Keigo Higashino, right now (and, until recently, the previous book in the series, which I bought at that price but has now gone back up). It's an awkward half-way house between the normal price and a usual sale price. I never quite know whether to go for it or not.

There are maybe 7 or 8 books on my wishlists at that price, with a handful more that I did end up buying.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. At or below $1.99 (or £1.99), I'm a lot more willing to fill in holes in a series, or replace DTB on my bookshelves. At least for genre fiction - non-fiction skews a bit more expensive in general, and I'll tolerate a bit higher price there.

And recently I'm seeing a lot more $2.99 and £2.99, just like you. I guess inflation is hitting the e-book world like everywhere else. I usually pass at that price, unless I really (really) like the series, or it's a book I very much want to read and can't get from one of my libraries. Or I sometimes will buy at $2.99 and not £2.99, given the exchange rate, or if the books are available at Kobo with VIP discount.

But yeah, it definitely seems that sale prices are creeping up a bit. Sigh!

When checking to see the price at Kobo (it's not on sale there, at least as of now ), I noticed a free short story, 'Twas the Chihuahua Before Christmas, that says it features characters from Chihuahua of the Baskervilles. Oddly enough, I can't find the short story on Kindle, but here are the Kobo links

If you have Amazon Prime, you can get Fatal Intrusion, which is the first in the Sanchez & Heron series by Jeffery Deaver and Isabella Maldonado, for free as part of the Kindle First Reads program. For two more days, that is, since it's an August pick...

As a wave of murders grips Southern California, an unlikely pair must untangle the mysterious patterns of an elusive killer. A propulsive new series by New York Times bestselling author Jeffery Deaver and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Isabella Maldonado.

Carmen Sanchez is a tough Homeland Security agent who plays by the rules. But when her sister is attacked, revealing a connection to a series of murders across Southern California, she realizes a conventional investigation will not be enough to stop the ruthless perpetrator.

With nowhere else to turn, Sanchez enlists the aid of Professor Jake Heron, a brilliant and quirky private security expert who, unlike Sanchez, believes rules are merely suggestions. The two have a troubled past, but he owes her a favor and she’s cashing in. They team up to catch the assailant, who, mystifyingly, has no discernible motive and fits no classic criminal profile. All they have to go on is a distinctive tattoo and a singular obsession that gives this chillingly efficient tactician his nickname: Spider.
