Sony to launch new online store

Supposedly to be set next year, the new store will offer "music, movies, books, and other downloadable content geared for its various electronics". Will this mean an improved ebook store as well?

I doubt it given the push by Sony to provide firmware updates to all their ereaders to support epub.

I like to think this is a step by Sony to sell their digital content globally unlike currently it is essentially limited to the US (UK is through a partner and not Sony itself AFAIK)

Do you know what's rather funny? Two years ago Sony _closed_ its online Sony Music store.

Oh probably, but it'd be nice to know when Sony were moving to ePub anyway.

That would be such a welcome move on their part, even if you didn't use them it would force the existing bookstores that sell ePub to improve their stores whether it was range of stock, pricing or usability because if they weren't a better option then most would take the easy option instead.

Looks more like an attempt by Sony to ape the iTunes store. If they try to sell digital content internationally via this new store, they'll still have to deal with all sorts of international rights issues -- not just for books but for all the other content as well. Besides, they are likely to do some additional international expansion, but knowing Sony it's unlikely they would actually coordinate well enough to sync that with putting out a new digital store.

I have a couple of old Sony laptops that I just did some work on and saw that Sony had their own multimedia servers a long time ago, as pointed out in the CNET article. I wonder what they plan to do now to make this a success when they have been unable to get this going in the past.

If they were being smart they would partner up with people who would be happy to do a sony-branded site, then again if that was the route they wanted to take then they would have taken that approach for the non-american versions of the sony bookstore since the likes of overdrive will heavily brand a site for you.

Hopefully by selling DRM-less MP3s. As a long abused minidisc owner, I cannot begin to describe the horror that was Sony's music store.

Tales of Sony's music store and ATRAC format should be used around a campfire to scare little children and adults alike.

*shudder*
