Rooted: Progress on Nook Color Bluetooth

Looks like some of the first progress has been made pairing a device with the Nook Color and its dormant Bluetooth module.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897934

This little option would open up a multitude of new possibilities for this device.

Thanks for this KN!

So it begs the question as to why B&N did not have this in the NC to begin with. I understand the logic behind keeping the Marketplace inaccessible so that buyers are restricted to buying content from B&N. Obfuscating bluetooth is a bit perplexing to say the least.

I dunno. Someone mentioned something about special licensing/approval from the FCC for the wireless device, but could be just hearsay.

It would be interesting if the rumored update to Android 2.2 might include bluetooth.

Wonder where it got it's name ... bluetooth. Someone should google that.

With B&N having their own little market/apps, it could still be implemented under their own software without too much of a stretch.

I'm sure they also wanted to get the device out for Christmas sales.

Quoth Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth):

Quote:
The word Bluetooth is an anglicised version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann, the epithet of the tenth-century king Harald I of Denmark and parts of Norway who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth does the same with communications protocols, uniting them into one universal standard.[2][3][4]

The Bluetooth logo is a bind rune merging the Younger Futhark runes H-rune.gif (Hagall) (ᚼ) and Runic letter berkanan.svg (Bjarkan) (ᛒ), Harald's initials.
That's actually pretty cool.

Maybe they don't want the technical support calls.

BT is a huge drain on battery, that may be one reason BN has not been keen on turning on BT. You add WiFi being turned on and you actually might be able to physically see the battery meter drain.

Well, since most people only use bluetooth for phones, and the NC has wireless already, I'm sure they also had no conception of anyone wanting BT for an e-reader.

It would be useful if it was A2DP. Imagine listening to an audiobook, mp3 or movie without being tangled with wires.

BT is a radio receiver and transmitter, so it does require FCC approval for the device in which it is located. The same goes for WiFi and cellular radios.

Without the FCC's approval, B&N cannot activate the BT radio in NCs meant for the USA market.

Since the BT radio is actually on the chip, wouldn't FCC still have to approve the NC? I don't know, just asking for information.

They did, Slayda, and there is an FCC stamp on the back (bottom) of the unit.

Here ...

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/...HHBNRV200-A%27

... there is one letter stating that the 3G capability has been disabled, which is interesting and bit strange at the same time. I then see plenty of test reports for 802.11b, g, and HT20(or n) which is the wireless, but I'm not seeing anything in there for 802.15 (bluetooth).

Because all the approvals are done at different times, it's very possible the bluetooth hasn't been done yet, or is still in process, or they just aren't interested in it.

I think bluetooth actually only uses a fraction of the power required for the 802.11.

Because having a LCD screen and free continous 3G like the whatsitsname ereader would be a very, very, very good thing.

Maybe in a future rev of the NC.
