Bad News Books

If you get bad news (such as the government is closing the place where you work) what type of book would you choose to bury yourself in to try and forget about it for a while?

Something long and involved that you have to pay attention to.

I went through a rather painful divorce about fifteen years ago. I found myself suffering from a lack of attention span which made reading anything of substance very difficult, a symptom of temporary depression I suppose. Didn't help that I was frequently half-drunk.

While looking for something to read that wouldn't require too much concentration, I stumbled upon Christopher Pike's prolific line of young-adult murder books. They were well-written, tightly plotted, and very suspenseful. I fondly remember them for having helped get me through the grieving process, keeping my mind occupied while the healing took place. I must have read over a dozen of them.

That's what worked for me back then, so if something similar happened today I'd probably look for suspenseful, quality YA fiction like, say, Scott Westerfeld's Uglies or Midnighters series, or maybe Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy (bought it, but haven't read it yet; maybe I'll save it for the next crisis).

I agree with the Hunger Games trilogy. It will serve several purposes- it will remind you that life could be worse, and it will be easy to read and engaging and help you lose yourself in someone else's misery for a while.

Sorry about your situation

Have you read any of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich? They're easy-to-read, and downright silly. They might serve to put a smile on your face.

I second the recommendation of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. Start with "One for the Money" and work your way through. There are at least a dozen titles. Light, fun, but suspenseful enough to keep you turning the pages.
