Stop overwriting metadata jacket on conversion (instead add another one)?

Hi everyone, long time calibre user and mobilereads lurker here and I've created an account just to ask a question that noone else has asked as I far as I can find. I'll explain what the issue is:

I have a Kindle and a large library of books organised in calibre. My kindle doesn't tell me any information about my books which is very inconvenient for me, especially for reading long series as it's difficult to know what book comes next and a hassle when browsing my books on the kindle.

My workaround for this is as follows:

1. Convert book files to add a metadata jacket for each book in calibre with custom columns (word count), series number and description from the comments section etc

2. Merge all books in a series using the plugin Epubmerge and save as a new book file titled "____ Anthology" with a description in the comments taken as a list of titles in the series

3. This is where the issue is - I then want to add a final metadata jacket to the anthology books that describes the entire series, however when I try this it instead overwrites the jacket of the first book in the series rather than adding a new one.

Hence my question is, is there a way to add a metadata jacket during file conversion that does NOT overwrite an existing jacket?
Thanks in advance!

Simple answer: No

There are parts of the book (semantics) that there can only be ONE file identified.

You can have PAGES that LOOK exactly the same, but can't be flagged and have the other maintain the flag.
eg. I frequent include Alt-cvrs in my books, they can appear in the TOC, but Calibre can't identify them as covers.

I just did the following on a EPUB2 book using the Sigil editor
  • I moved the jacket.xhtml file to the back of the book (as I always do)
  • I removed the following line from the jacket.xhtml
    Code:
    <meta name="calibre-content" content="jacket"/>
  • I renamed it to jacket-01.xhtml, saved the EPUB and exited Sigil
  • I used the Polish tool to create a new jacket
  • I get a new jacket.xhtml file and I didn't lose the jacket-01.xhtml file

This may not work for EPUB3. Moving the jacket files and using Sigil are probably irrelevant - I always move the jacket to the back and I use Sigil more than the calibre editor.
