Kindle Voyage display problem

Hello All!

I've a Kindle Voyage which looks normal for the first time:
- It boots (shows the child under the tree, loading completes)
- But here comes the interesting part: After the loading completes the screen shows the screensaver image.

I can't wake it up with the power button

What i've done so far:
- Extracted the 5.6.5 update and flashed uImage to kernel
- Formatted FAT
- Exported as USB
- Then copied the full update file to the device and it updated.

But the situation is the same...

I've went into diags and the touch working, the lights working so it looks like the screen is OK to me.

Here is a boot log:

Nothing jumps out at me and says: "THIS IS IT!"
The early failures to setup lipc seem strange, but I **think** I have seen those before from a device that is working normally.

The recent thread about using fastboot to recover an erased Kindle PW-3:
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=269099
has a lot of serial I/O capture logs attached to it.
(Which I think you have seen, your post reads as if you have anyway.)

Read through yours above and some of the later ones (after we used the recovery menu to re-load the factory Update image) side-by-side.
Clip out and quote any differences you find.

Keep in mind that since it is a different device, there may be minor filename differences, but they are both 5.6.5

@MadMAXXX : See, I knew we would find a use for all of those log files.

Hi Knc1,

I've checked and compared the following log with mine: Log_Recovery.rar
It looks identical with the licp failures which is included in MadMAXXX's log

Here is the plus lines what is included in my log and not in MadMAXXX's:

That last line is a result, not a cause.

Did this device ever work properly?

Can you exchange it for a new one?
(Opening it and adding the serial port has nothing to do with this failure.)

Did you modify the /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow file of the 'main' operating system?

Have you tried running the 'diags' operating system?
  • Reboot device
  • Hold down a key until the u-boot> prompt appears, release key, press enter
  • bootm 0xE41000

With what result/observations?

And if nothing else seems possible - would you be interested in trying to re-install the original factory firmware install?
(We (well, several of us) have a copy of the pre-shipment factory install but no one has ever tried it on a device in the field.)

I don't know the past of the device, i've bought it in this condition for a good price.
No, i can't exchange it.
As i worte i don't the past of the device so i don't know if the passwd and shadow files are modified or not. I assume they are untouched.
Yes, i've been in diags and everything seems to be OK. The touch is working, the lights are working when running the tests.
If you need athor informations from diags please let me know!

Of course i'm interested in factory firmware as if nothing helps then i'm happy to help the community in experimentation

Let us assume that the prior owner tried to serial port jailbreak it, caused a problem they couldn't solve and sold it (cheap) rather than join up here and ask how to fix it.

That may not be so, but that will be our assumption until we learn differently.

When you followed the directions to re-install the Amazon 5.6.5 update package, that should have replaced any file modifications made to the 'main' system.
That is a complete, 'main' system image.

It **should** have fixed anything except damaged hardware.
(It is what I would have recommended if you had posted here before doing it.)

Make sure you are subscribed to this thread so you get an e-mail notification of posts here.
I will find where on the Internet I stored that factory file and make a follow-up post when things are ready to continue.
(RSN, hours (because I may have to move it around), not days)

- - - -

While viewing this thread - -
In the top blue bar, the 'thread tools' drop down box - -
That is where you will find the subscription controls.

If you can't see the USB storage when you connect to your PC, you can use the recovery menu (below).

You will want to repeat the booting into diags (directions given above),
only this time, catch this stopping point:
Code:
3.0.35-lab126 #1 PREEMPT Fri Jul 31 15:04:21 PDT 2015 armv7l
Press [ENTER] for recovery menu...
Holding enter down as the kernel starts up will do just as well.

Now you will be using the touch screen.
Please stay away from the "Erase MMC" selection - yes, it does work - no need to try it out.

If you haven't yet put the factory install file on USB visible storage, then:
Use the recovery menu to export USB storage (user storage)
Connect Kindle-to-PC cable
copy the update file to the top level of visible storage
safely remove or eject - depending on your PC system
Remove Kindle-to-PC cable

Note: you may have to un-export USB storage at this point.

Now use the: "load mmc from update file" selection.
(or whatever it is called - the above is what my memory returns)

Note: you may have to go through the re-boot, boot diags, catch the Recovery Menu sequence again, just to reach the above command selection.
(Translation: I don't recall if it can be updated while the USB storage is exported.)

Edit: PM sent.

Thanks!
I've started to download the file, but it's a little slow... But who cares maybe it'll fix my Kindle
As soon as the file is downloaded, i'll try it and let you know the result!

Thanks in advance!

That is the 2cent/gigabyte rate, I don't purchase the 19cent/gigabyte service rate.

And it depends on what part of the world your in - that link is to the USA, there is another archive set in a European cloud (not owned by myself).

I've compared the original boot process and the one after the "update" and i've found the following differences:
U-Boot version changed:
Code:
U-Boot 2009.08-lab126 (Aug 07 2014 - 00:52:13)
This info message is gone:
Code:
info asr_setup:winmgr_running=true. winmgr is ready::
But a new info came in:
Code:
[ 179.273854] ath6kl: temporary war to avoid sdio crc error
New messages:
Code:
info blanket_f:unloading blanket module:screensaver:
info blanket_f:module already unloaded:ad_screensaver:
info blanket_f:module already unloaded:ad_screensaver_active:
info blanket_f:loading blanket module:screensaver:
.
.
info mesquite:started::
info mesquite:read_in_counters:REBOOTS=0, REBOOT_LIMIT=1, RESTARTS=0, RESTART_LIMIT=5:
info monitor:writing_file:file=/var/run/upstart/mesquite.restarts:

One interesting thing is that after the update i can't boot into diags:

Maybe that's because the update doesn't contain the DIAGS partition and there is a version mismatch in the DIAGS and main or kernel version?!

Thats where i'm now. I think it should be a hardware fault, but i don't know which one...

And again thanks knc1 for your help!

Device: No K1, PW2, KV, KOA
Code:
kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(179,2)
No file-system on /dev/mmcblk0p2 (device 179,2)
It got trashed in the process.

There is no reason to version match parts of 'main' with parts of 'diags' - -
The series 5 devices are true 'dual boot' - like having WinXP and Win## installed on the same computer.

Not a big deal, you can run approximately forever without 'diags' system.
And, it can be installed with fastboot (although you still need the serial port to get into fastboot).

Now all we need is a volunteer with a working KV to grab an image copy of the 'diags' kernel and OS file-system (I don't have a KV and neither does NiLuJe).

By the way - This device is a KV - since it appears to have working hyptic buttons - but it does not behave as expected for a KV.

What are the first six characters of the serial number? <<--- important info.
What firmware version (in 'main') is shown as installed? (including build number).
Both found at: Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Device Info

Did you have to re-name the image file I sent you?
Did you have to do anything unexpected to use it?

The u-boot version **should** have changed, that is expected, since the KV-5.6.5 update package contains a (main) u-boot image.
Plus, this is an original factory firmware build, from a machine shipped the first day -
Long before the December build date of the u-boot you did have on it.

PS: Keep the device away from a network connection - - we don't want it updating to the current 5.6.5 just yet.
Plus: It now claims to be a Special Offers device - that wasn't evident before.
So it will be hungry for a network connection - keep it off the network.

Your (diag) u-boot and kernel/initramfs (a single image file) is working just fine, don't mess with it.

The device can be jail broken with what you have now (from the 'diags' initramfs).
Although I'll let NiLuJe speak up about where /dev/mmcblk0p1 should be mounted for it to work (it's a recent refinement to the JB process).

As the device still don't work i got the version information from the file located on the exported USB partition.
The version is: 5.5.0 I have to check the build number when i'm home.

I renamed it to update.bin as you suggested. Thats the only thing what i've done with it

That won't be hard because only locked WIFI networks are available and i can't get into the OS to connect to one of them

How did I mis-read your post?
I thought you reported that 'main' was working normally and only 'diags' did not work.
???

5.5.0 is the expected version - I'll rename the update file on my cloud.

@NiLuJe: B013 09 <<-- that does not have a region mentioned (Australia maybe? It is WiFi only).

Crap - we should try to get its initial factory update off of it.
Do you have access to a Linux system?

Maybe you missed my last sentence: Thats where i'm now. I think it should be a hardware fault, but i don't know which one...

If a boot CD or virtual machine works then i can do it.
But if it needs serial communication i don't know how to install my USB-TTL cable driver into the linux. And if it would be a VM then i don't know if the USB passthru will or will not work

All lower case as posted above or all UPPER CASE as I suggested?
PS: It is the only thing you should be able to do to it - its cyrptographically signed.

My touchscreen pointer ( http://KayNine.Info ) needs a walk, back in a bit.
