As Kovid already explained, the reason why they are grouped is because they get started from within an owner process. On Windows 7 this _will_ cause the taskbar icons to group. There is no way around this other than making them true stand-alones. And my memory is a bit shady on this (no longer have MS Office installed), but I do believe MS Office shows the same behavior when opening multiple documents in Office programs. e.g. if other documents get opened in a new window from within Word, they group, if you launch a separate Word from the start menu, they don't group. (at least not in the same way, if normal taskbar grouping is enabled they collapse into a single group button when a set number of instances is reached)

This happens regardless of the grouping setting for the taskbar.

FYI. As for Quick Launch, it still exists but is no longer added as standard toolbar to the taskbar. You will have to do this manually if you want to restore QuickLaunch functionality in Windows 7 (can't speak for W8 as I don't have W8.)

Right-click the taskbar and select to create a new toolbar. Then navigate here when it asks you what to add.

C:\Users\{YOU}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Go the the following site and use Option 1 for installing Quick Launch for either Windows 7 or 8.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ndows-8-a.html

I've been using this for many years on different Windows computers.

It's moot given Kovid's last post - but, Office doesn't group icons for different programs - eg Word & Excel.

FWIW There's an addon for Office called Office Tabs - puts documents in tabs a'la Notepad++, browsers etc - free version is good for Word, Excel & Powerpoint.
