His themes look interesting. With Halloween reading coming up, I'll be watching to see what you two think of him. Several of his books are £1 at the moment!

Inspection by Josh Malerman is $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Boys are being trained at one school for geniuses, girls at another. Neither knows the other exists—until now. The New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box invites you into a world of secrets and chills in a coming-of-age story like no other.

J is a student at a school deep in a forest far away from the rest of the world.

J is one of only twenty-six students, all of whom think of the school’s enigmatic founder as their father. J’s peers are the only family he has ever had. The students are being trained to be prodigies of art, science, and athletics, and their life at the school is all they know—and all they are allowed to know.

But J suspects that there is something out there, beyond the pines, that the founder does not want him to see, and he’s beginning to ask questions. What is the real purpose of this place? Why can the students never leave? And what secrets is their father hiding from them?

Meanwhile, on the other side of the forest, in a school very much like J’s, a girl named K is asking the same questions. J has never seen a girl, and K has never seen a boy. As K and J work to investigate the secrets of their two strange schools, they come to discover something even more mysterious: each other.

Maynard's House by Herman Raucher is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Raucher is more known for literary fiction. Summer of '42 was a big bestseller of his. But Maynard's House gets excellent reviews.

Quote:
Austin Fletcher, a disturbed young Vietnam War vet, is willed a small house deep in the woods of northern Maine. He comes to own it by the generosity of a brother-in-arms—a fellow soldier and confidante, Maynard Whittier, killed in action by a wayward mortar shell. The rugged landscape of Maine is an intoxicating blend of claustrophobic interiors and endless frozen wastelands. Little by little, the mysterious force in the house asserts itself until Austin isn’t exactly sure what is in his mind and what is real. And just when our hero’s had enough and is ready to quit the place, a blizzard arrives and the real haunting begins.

Saint Sadist by Lucas Mangum
Amazon US $0.99
Pages: 98

Pregnant with her father's child, nineteen-year-old Courtney is a girl on the run, willing to do anything to make her way on the road. When a car accident leaves her wounded by the side of a desolate highway, she is taken in by an environmentalist doomsday cult led by the enigmatic Saint Ambrose, a charismatic preacher and ex-environmental scientist who gave up everything after claiming to see the face of God. When he meets the seemingly vulnerable Courtney, he is taken by her beauty and her wounded soul. Now, with the promise of salvation hanging in the balance, Courtney must undergo a series of trials, each more painful and humiliating than the last, her incestuously conceived baby growing in her womb, a strange presence visiting her at night and telling her Ambrose has lost his way and it is she who must overthrow him.

Goat Dance by Douglas Clegg is $0.99 at Amazon US.

Clegg is a very good writer and his books rarely go on sale. This book is his first, originally published in 1989.

Quote:
A town must face its terrifying past as a possessed child threatens to unleash unspeakable horror upon them all.

A young man – Malcolm "Cup" Coffey – returns to Pontefract, Virginia, to find the girl he once loved – while an ancient evil grows stronger within a silent house on the edge of a frozen lake.

A couple of Scott Nicholson books are available for $0.99 a piece.

I've read The Harvest twice and enjoyed it.

I haven't yet read The Home or Speed Dating with the Dead (that name). I do remember The Home getting a lot of praise when it was originally published as a paperback. And Speed Dating sounds much better than its goofy title suggests.

The Harvest

Quote:
An infection that consumes and changes people...

When an alien entity lands in the remote Appalachian Mountains, a clairvoyant psychology professor, a drunken dirt farmer, and a disillusioned tycoon must team up to stop it before the infection spreads.

But with Windshake's annual spring festival coming, the town is full of visitors, unaware of the unnatural menace creeping toward them from the woods...
The Home

Quote:
When twelve-year-old Freeman Mills arrives at Wendover, a group home for troubled children, it’s a chance for a fresh start. But second chances aren’t easy for Freeman, the victim of painful childhood experiments that gave him the ability to read other people’s minds.

At Wendover, Freeman and the other children are subjected to more secret experiments, organized by a shadowy organization called The Trust. But the experiments do more than open up clairvoyant powers--the electromagnetic fields used in the experiments are summoning the ghosts of the patients who died at Wendover back when it was a psychiatric ward.

Now a new scientist has been brought into the project, an unstable and cruel pioneer in ESP studies who performed most of his work on a very special subject: his son, Freeman Mills.
Speed Dating With the Dead

Quote:
When Digger Wilson brings his paranormal team Spirit Seekers International to the White Horse Inn, he is skeptical that his dead wife will keep her half of the bargain. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, and just before she died, she promised to meet him there.

But when one of the conference guests channels a mysterious presence and an Ouija board spells out a pet phrase known only to Digger and his wife, his convictions are challenged.

And when guests start to disappear, Digger and his daughter Kendra must face the circle of demons that view the hotel as their personal playground. Because soon the inn will be closing for good, angels can’t be trusted, and demons don’t like to play alone . . .

Creative Spirit: A Supernatural Thriller by Scott Nicholson
Amazon US $0.99

I believe @ZodWallop mentioned this one after talking about Jonathan Janz's The Dark Game.

When artists gather at a remote Appalachian estate for a retreat, they are unaware that their energy is feeding something unwholesome. Sculptor Mason Jackson and dying parapsychologist Anna Galloway must uncover the dark secrets of Korban Manor before their spirits become trapped forever.

I have mentioned it before. I've read it in paperback where it was published as The Manor.

Memories are hazy. I remember liking it but not loving it. In general, I do like Scott Nicholson.

It's possible you might be confusing these two titles. (Or perhaps he totally revised the earlier work.)

First few paragraphs [quoted]:

The Manor:
Mason Jackson stared at the large oil painting that hung on the wall above the fireplace. It stared right back, as severe as any of Mason’s former art instructors. The scowling face of the portrait dominated the room, ten times life-size. The flesh tones of the oils were so realistic that Mason could imagine the figure bursting free of the ornate wooden frame. A brass plate beneath the painting was etched with the name ephram korban.

Creative Spirit:
1898

If the fire is out, I’m dead.
As Sylva ran through the dark forest, the laurel branches slapped at her and wooden talons raked through her long, flowing hair.
But it wasn’t her fault. Momma had a fever and Daddy was off the mountain with a load of apples, Sylva had to take care of her two little brothers and she was only sixteen and stuck on this idiot mountain and life shouldn’t be so unfair.

Here's the synopsis for each:

The Manor
Quote:
Posing as a gifted artist to gain entrance to the late Ephram Korban's secluded manor house, parapsychologist Anna Galloway, plagued by nightmares about Korban's retreat, discovers that a dark evil is feeding off the energies of everyone in the house to become immortal.

Creative Spirit

Quote:
When artists gather at a remote Appalachian estate for a retreat, they are unaware that their energy is feeding something unwholesome. Sculptor Mason Jackson and dying parapsychologist Anna Galloway must uncover the dark secrets of Korban Manor before their spirits become trapped forever.
And from Scott's website:
The author’s preferred DRM-free edition of the 2004 U.S. paperback release THE MANOR.
