metedata from http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/ is it possible
Sorry I'm new at posting on forums so if I did this wrong Sorry!
I have Calibre and I'm starting to input my books. Problem a lot of the metedata is not found. I would like to add http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/ as they have most of my books / covers / series information. Some of my books are older. Can I get the metedata to search in http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/ for my information? Again sorry if this is confusing |

One of the problems with fantasticfiction as a metadata source is their search engine. They don't have a very extensive ISBN database, which means that a search by ISBN will almost always fail.
So that means you would always search by title/author. Which is a bit more hit and miss in terms of getting results. However I am a big fan of this website, it is always my "goto website" for authors that is at the top of my list for the Search the Internet plugin. So it might be worth a punt to see how well it might be able to work. I will add it to my list to look into... Last edited by kiwidude; 05-11-2011 at 02:03 PM. |

Ok, I couldn't resist for long. It was a more interesting challenge because of how FF render certain web pages, being built from iframes with subqueries pulling back javascript data that is injected into the pages etc. So I'm mostly scraping javascript being returned from database server queries rather than the web page you see in your browser. Geek talk, sorry.
Anyways, a first cut at this is available here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=237 Please leave any feedback on that thread. Obviously it may likely have some kinks in it as a 1.0 version, so if you get some quirky results or issues please post the details of the title/author you tried to retrieve for and I will take a look. An important note - as I mentioned above the FF website really is not designed for ISBN based queries. Even if you do get a match, you get taken to a page which only gives you a subset of the information we want. So rather than mess around with it I have decided for the initial release at least to only support title/author based queries. So don't go creating an empty book record with Unknown Title/Unknown Author and some ISBN value and expect this plugin to fill in the rest - it won't. |
