You know what though, I hack around with software all day for my job. When I'm relaxing and reading a book, I want something that "just works". I don't want to have to worry about what format my ebook is in, I expect it to "just work". (I assume Calibre will convert appropriately.)
Calibre will do whatever you have told it to do. If you've paid no attention at all, I'm guessing you're loading epubs or even mobis onto your Kobo (hell, even PDFs); if you would answer this repeatedly-asked and highly relevant question we might have more chance of helping you. Remember we are all volunteers; posturing about how you think it should work will achieve nothing here. If you don't know what format you are loading, ask and I'm sure someone will help (right now I think we're assuming that since you've asserted your software credentials, you know how, but some knowledge fields are very specialised I guess).

Load kepubs, get a good sleepcover and see how your experience is then. Set Calibre up once for this and it will do it forevermore, until you tell it to stop. It doesn't require constant fiddling. Come back and ask further questions if you have them. Some might be solved by a very simple patching process, some might have other answers.

Or if you want it to "just work" with zero setup or input from you, buy only from the Kobo ebookstore *shrug*

Thanks @meeera , that's useful.

I've looked into Calibre and yes it does turn out that I'd been transferring/converting to epubs rather than kepubs. I thought I had all the requisite plugins installed, but apparently I hadn't. I had naively assumed that Calibre would "do the right thing" and know the best defaults for most common devices.

I also stopped trying to tap-to-turn and just swipe and that works better too.

(My delay in responding wasn't due to petulance, I just got busy and had to look into the Calibre configuration.)

One more thing I find mildly frustrating is the switching on/off of the backlighting. To save battery, I'd like to usually have the backlighting off. ) And when I turn it back on I'd like to be able to turn the backlighting "back on to the previous levels it was at when it was on" and there is no way to do that, afaik.

How high are you turning on your brightness? I rarely go above maybe 12%.

With the current firmware, when you use the left side slider for the light, you see the % changing where the header would be. That makes it very easy to get back to the level you were at. No Reader allows shutting off the light and then turing it back on at the same level. They all have a slider.

There's not really a "best" - some people here prefer epub, some kepub. Glad you have it set up to your liking now.

How much battery are you finding the frontlighting to suck? I've never bothered to turn it off - I like the improved contrast with it on - and the battery lasts a long time for me.

Nooks do. You hold down the 'n' button to turn the light on/off.

I just picked up a clara HD to fill the void left by my currently broken Aura H2O.
I'm quite impressed, though the reduction in screen size is a loss, it is made up for with better clarity of text and the comfort light is a joy for my bedtime reading.
It is also a lot lighter and easier to hold than the aura, so it's swings and roundabouts.
