Red face RIAA Paid $16M+ In Legal Fees To Collect $391K

A little off of the reading topic but related to the legal issue of digital media. I really just thought this was hillarious!

My heart bleeds for them....not.

I thought this was an interesting article. Poor RIAA, look up because the asteroid is coming.

I wish the same would happen to the Italian counterpart of RIAA (called SIAE)!

Or the Dutch one, called "Brein" (translates to brain, but I think they're brainless)

That's kinda funny, because some people call the RIAA the MAFIAA.

Here, AFACT (Australian Federation against Copyright Theft) filed a law suit against iiNet, which is Australia's third biggest ISP. They were perceived as a soft target. Big enough to be noticed, small enough not to mount a strong defence. Oh how they were wrong....

iiNet was accused of facilitating piracy in the form of downloading movies and TV shows. The judge awarded iiNet the case and AFACT had to pay iiNet AU four million dollars in costs. The presiding judge was really scathing towards AFACT.

What a ridiculous suit. Theoretically, by that line of thinking, states could be sued for operating roads that facilitate the transport of drugs and other outlawed items. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Hmm, I could'a sworn I posted on this thread earlier. Ah well....

The RIAA never treated this as a revenue generator. Their goal is to discourage copyright infringement.

Or to put it another way: If they collected $16 million from the lawsuits with an expenditure of only $400k, you'd be utterly livid.

This is why they changed their strategy to ACTA. They pay off politicians to create trade agreements that force countries to make stupid laws and then the tax payers have to pay the legal fees.

We should note that the $391k did not go to artists. The RIAA is in the buisness of helping record companies not recording artists. The companies who use Hollywood accounting to never pay people in the first place. So happy day the RIAA lost $15.4M maybe they'll take it all out of what they were supposed to pay artists as a copyright protection fee.
