Combining font styles into single ttf file

Hey, a couple of questions for those with more knowledge than me..

My question is, is it possible to combine all of the font styles (normal, italic, bold, bold italic) into a single ttf file?

If it is possible, would the PRS-505 accept it (after renaming the font of course)?

If it did accept it, would the reader USE the full font in it's entirety like it does with embedded fonts, or would it still use its crap italics approximation etc?

Afaik no. One character can only be mapped to one glyph in a ttf-file. Basically each glyph can only have one horizontal metric value, one vertical metric value and only one style indicator. And finally it isn't possible to add more than one font style name to a ttf-file.

You would have to use a True Type Collection (.ttc, basically a package including multiple True Type Fonts) and the Sony PRS-505 can't deal with ttc-files afaik.

Thanks for the answer.

I didn't have much hope really...

if only the reader could do proper italics without embedded fonts... (for LRF that is)

You are welcome. If you don't want embed the fonts you could just copy all font-files of the font-family to your reader, use ePub as file-format for your ebooks and use appropriate CSS-styles. If you are interested the following threads might give you some hints:

While epub is a nice format, I like reading fully justified text, which ADE on the PRS does not support yet (if ever). This is the main thing holding me back from using epub as my primary format.
