Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see where else this news was posted.

Is there anywhere that talks about the update (beyond just mentioning epub)? I'm curious if they are making any improvements that people had asked for (that they implemented on the 505 but not the 500).

To clarify - what's been promised is what Sony call an "update path". We don't know whether this will be a firmware upgrade, or some kind of trade-in deal. My own personal view is that it's more likely to be the latter.

The problem is that there's no quoted source for this - just a potentially related quote from a Sony "Director of Corporate Communications" (translation: 'PR') lady.

Personally, I hope it's either a software update, or a $100 trade-in. If it's a trade-in for less than $100, then it's worthless. I just hope they'll give some official statement about it soon. They must know what they're going to do by now.

A trade in offer for $100 is worthless too. You can sell a 500 Reader in decent shape easily for well over $100! Which makes the trade-in worthless, fiscally speaking.

But you don't have to go with a $100 trade-in. You are free to sell a 500 anyway you like.

I asked Valerie Motis to confirm the Teleread quotation. She said that she had not made any recent statements, and that Teleread's report was based on the statement she made a couple months back.

Fiscally speaking then, I'd sell the 500 pronto. It's likely to plummet in value with the price cuts of the new generation readers. Personally the $100 trade-in offer for a 3+ year old reader seems fairly generous. Some people don't like to bother with Craigslist or eBay and it's an easy way for them to get new value out of their reader.
