Ok. Sorry! I obviously got the wrong end of the stick. It does seem reasonable for Amazon to do this since the books are for publication.

KindleGen is only used if you want to upload a book via the Kindle Digital Publishing programme to SELL on Amazon's book store. Yes, Calibre's Mobi files work absolutely fine for sending to a Kindle.

I've never had a problem uploading mobis created in Calibre to Amazon/KDP for sale. In fact, since KF8 introduced all sorts of problems with font-face/family and sizes (particularly on the PaperWhite), it's the most reliable way to get a file that won't have formatting errors because it uses the old mobi format.
