Now is the time to choose February's topic!
Any and all ideas are appreciated; just post! We are very flexible with the approach to our monthly topic and it can be a topic, theme, category or whatever else may work. It could be something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue... Also feel free to discuss or build upon anyone else's idea if you'd like. Here is a list of most of our previous topics in alphabetical and numerical order for perusal if interested; you could suggest something from the list, use it as inspiration or suggest something entirely different: Spoiler:
This process will last until around when the discussion thread for this month's selection goes up, which could be as early as around the 10th but could be some days later depending, at which point a topic will be settled on for January. We don't have any hard or fast rule for how it will be decided amongst the ideas presented. If there seems to be a consensus or majority interest in a particular idea, we'll go with that one. Otherwise, an idea by someone who hasn't chosen a topic before or in awhile might be the one we go with. If neither of those are relevant, we'll likely go with the first one suggested that isn't my own. If we happen to have no ideas posted before the discussion thread for this month's selection goes up, I will choose a topic for the next month and announce it so that we'll have something. However, if this is the case, any others may still post ideas after this and we'll likely go with one of those instead if so. And with all that said- The floor is now open! |

Well, given my tardiness regarding poetry I thought I could maybe do penance here .
I'll take my suggestion from the Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne song Free Fallin' and suggest Free Falling as a topic. It could be: A fall into or out of a relationship. A fall into personal despair (economic, depression,...). A novel (or maybe non-fiction) framed within a stock market, business or economic crash. Science fiction with an anti-gravity thread . A novel involving sky-divers. A free falling journey. etc. Also a few clues in this video (but only if one likes Tom Petty and are not fussed by the freedoms of rock video). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lWJXDG2i0A |

I have two main possibilities in mind for March:
-Queer as Folk. This could have LGBT themes, but I mean it more as the original turn of the phrase, that people can be odd and different. So, the topic could be about any character or group of characters with 'differences' whatever that may be, or considered strange by others or those around them. Or it could be about seemingly ordinary people who turn out not to be so ordinary after all. -Mad as a March Hare. I thought it might be apropos for next month. In a way it could be a bit similar to Queer as Folk, though this one would probably lend itself to a focus on more extreme eccentricity or 'madness', but there's many possible ways to interpret this topic. It could have something to do with pronounced mental illness, it could be about 'mad' taken as anger, it could be about hares or rabbits, it could be something to do with the actual character of the March Hare, it could be something to do with the month of March, it could be something to do with the original source of the phrase being that hares act more erratic and excitedly in their mating season and so about characters who act erratic and excitedly, etc. Lots of diverging possibilities with this one. I'll probably think on it a couple of days or so. If anyone has any preference or either of these or any other suggestions for our next topic then please post! |

Interesting! Just last week I was mourning quietly to myself that the the normal rules of polysemy do not apply to "gay" (and similarly, "queer"). I've been reading quite a few books recently either written or set in times predating the current primary meanings of those words, and I was reflecting that while English generally adores polysemy, these words seem, for whatever reason, to be exceptions - their now primary meanings are effectively their only meanings. A theme that is deliberately open to differing definitions would be a great idea

All right, it sounds like our March topic will be Queer as Folk!

Now is the time to choose April's topic!
Any and all ideas are appreciated; just post! We are very flexible with the approach to our monthly topic and it can be a topic, theme, category or whatever else may work. Here is a list of most of our previous topics in alphanumerical order for perusal if interested; you could suggest something from the list, use it as inspiration or suggest something entirely different: Spoiler:
This process will last until around when the discussion thread for this month's selection goes up. I've shortened this post to the most relevant info but the same guidelines still apply from previous months. We're looking forward to any ideas offered and the floor is now open! |

Seems quiet here so I will leap in - while Journey Around the World has been the topic before I'll suggest the less specific Journey or Journeys.
Could be a single journey or several journeys, fiction or non-fiction, long distance or short distance, etc. |

I like that idea. There are many types of journeys that could be considered.
I have been brainstorming some ideas too. I was thinking something about an unusual Point of View in the book, but I haven't figured out a clever way to express it. Hope that makes sense! |

Both of those ideas sound intriguing to me. I like that the Journey or Journeys expands on and simplifies Journey around the World, as the latter category was very interesting but a little complex because of the special rules for it (only books from countries that we haven't ever read from yet in the club were allowed). I also like the unusual Point of View idea and am also curious what sort of nominations it might bring.
Maybe we could do the one about Journeys for April and think on the one about Point of View and perhaps use it for May. How does that sound? |
