I dont forget that. I see it whenever a political thread comes up. It is usually 50 UK guys telling us 3 Americans how bad our country is.

I am not starting an argument but I will tell you the plain truth of the matter.
There is a little bit of a culture difference here. It is insulting to most of us Americans and you guys do it anyways.

Political threads on this site go like this:

cut and paste or youtube video initial post (never one's own original thoughts on a matter)

side A: America is doing it wrong
side B: SCREW YOU
side A: No screw you
Side B: (long paragraph no one reads)
side A: (15 quotes on a single post that are too confusing to read)
Side A and Side B: (2 pages of personal attacks)
mod: settle down
Side A: (Cut and paste from wikipedia)
Side B: Screw you
mod: final warning guys
Side A and M together: WAAAAA
mod: thread closed

We all are prejudiced, some of us are more, others less. Discussions in such an international board like MobileRead *can* help to reduce our prejudices. Sometimes it does work, sometimes not. It's not only a question of being prejudiced, it's also a question how other posters will react. Adding a imaginary "in my humbled opinion" to a post made by another user often helps to prevent overreactions.

Anyway, political and religious discussions are more prone to turning into flamewars than many other topics and MobileRead (even the Lounge) is the wrong place for such "Nation/country X is doing Y wrong" discussions imho. One (if not the main) intention of MobileRead is to be place where people can discuss reading and eBook related topics in an friendly and relaxed atmosphere or have some fun in the Lounge. Political and religious topics don't go well with that intention imho.

Anyway, i guess you could need some more sugar today: http://viacomit.net/2008/11/14/do-you-like-lips/

I think the key when discussing hot topics is respect. If we all remember that each of us come from different backgrounds, have had different experiences, and have been exposed to different arguments; it can go a long way toward a better understanding of another's point of view. Toleration is fundamental. Also fundamental is the recognition that good people can reach very different conclusions from the same data. Above all, in discussing hot topics, it's imperative that we always allow for the possibility that we may be wrong, even about our most cherished beliefs; for none of us has the complete picture.

Whenever people resort to name-calling and personal attacks, it is a sure sign that their own notions are unsettled and that their arguments are bankrupt of any real intellectual content. Whenever that occurs, I simply refuse to feed into it and consider the conversation over.

Subjects touching fundamentals of our being automatically put us in a defensive mode. This can set off unpredictable reactions unless one is trained and disciplined to leave enough time to react with diplomacy. Honestly, there aren't many here who have the qualities required for fundamental discussion...

That all works fine in theory and on paper.

This forum's track record is bad. So far all political and religious threads get closed because of fights....real mean fights. Every single one of them.

And no...not all because of me.

A fight is a fight because there are belligerent opponents. If I am one of them I am responsible for the way it turns off. Isn't this logical?
I don't understand why you think MR is bad there. Is it because you think you lost a fight, or that you haven't clearly won it? Or that it wasn't won because it was stopped before you won it? Do you like fights?
Clearly, there shouldn't have been a fight and the best way to prevent a fight is to prevent it's source. That's the role of policing. I think it's clear enough to understand. MR can't be responsible for the actions of its users. It's a shame that it should need policing at all... But hey! That's how the world is outside too!...
