True but while adding a launcher does help, the behavior of tapping the "home" soft key returning to the carousel becomes old very quickly.

That's why I switched from my kindle fire hd to nook hd & hd+. Sick of the carousel. I could deal with it until they broke the ability to add custom wallpaper to a launcher. I have come to realize I also really like the physical home button, as well as the SD card slot. So, no interest here in the latest and greatest Kindle Fire. We'll keep the HD7.

Just a slight correction. I don't remember all the technical details (you can look those up on anandtech if you want), but for all intents and purposes the Nexus 7 ships with a Snapdragon 600.

The reason Qualcomm calls it an S4 pro is purely arbitrary, and is related to its clockspeed. At 1.7Ghz it's a Snapdragon 600. Drop it to 1.5, and it becomes an S4 Pro. Despite the fact that the hardware is entirely the same.

There is something very fishy about the "quoted" K-Fire specifications. The SnapDragon 800 SOC contains a GPS block, so why does the KF not have it listed. Maybe those random specs were just inserted into the rumor mill in an attempt to diminish enthusiasm for the new Nexus 7??????

That's incorrect. The S4 Pro is based on the Krait-200 Core, whereas the 600 is based on the Krait-300 core.

At the core of the HTC One is a Snapdragon 600 (APQ8064Pro) SoC at 1.7 GHz. This is quad core Krait 300 (as opposed to 200 in MSM8960 or APQ8064) which brings a 15 percent increase in IPC as well as higher clocks (from 1.5 to 1.7 GHz), for about 20–30 percent higher overall CPU performance.

For the new Nexus 7 they decided to call it an S4 Pro but it's more like a more like a lower-binned or underclocked Snapdragon 600.

They "bin" processors when they don't quite meet the spec but still want to use the silicon. AMD/Intel has done this for ages (dual-core chips with 2 more cores enable-able with extra voltage, CPUs with cache disabled, etc).
